Pretest ER 3rd edition is pretty comprehensive and tests over the major topics one needs to know for ER. Some questions may be a little easier than what may be seen on the shelf exam but overall the book still gives a good base of knowledge for the test.

Excerpt from A Short History of England

It will be very reasonably asked why I should consent, though upon a sort of challenge, to write even a popular essay in English history, who make no pretence to particular scholarship and am merely a member of the public. The answer is that I know just enough to know one thing: that a history from the standpoint of a member of the public has not been written. What we call the popular histories should rather be called the anti-popular histories. They are all, nearly without exception, written against the people; and in them the populace is either ignored or elaborately proved to have been wrong. It is true that Green called his book "A Short History of the English People"; but he seems to have thought it too short for the people to be properly mentioned. For instance, he calls one very large part of his story "Puritan England." But England never was Puritan. It would have been almost as unfair to call the rise of Henry of Navarre "Puritan France." And some of our extreme Whig historians would have been pretty nearly capable of calling the campaign of Wexford and Drogheda "Puritan Ireland."

About the Author
Gilbert Keith Chesterton (29 May 1874 – 14 June 1936) better known as G. K. Chesterton, was an English writer, lay theologian, poet, philosopher, dramatist, journalist, orator, literary and art critic, biographer, and Christian apologist. Chesterton is often referred to as the "prince of paradox." Time magazine, in a review of a biography of Chesterton, observed of his writing style: "Whenever possible Chesterton made his points with popular sayings, proverbs, allegories—first carefully turning them inside out." Chesterton is well known for his fictional priest-detective Father Brown, and for his reasoned apologetics. Even some of those who disagree with him have recognized the wide appeal of such works as Orthodoxy and The Everlasting Man. Chesterton, as a political thinker, cast aspersions on both Progressivism and Conservatism, saying, "The whole modern world has divided itself into Conservatives and Progressives. The business of Progressives is to go on making mistakes. The business of the Conservatives is to prevent the mistakes from being corrected." Chesterton routinely referred to himself as an "orthodox" Christian, and came to identify this position more and more with Catholicism, eventually converting to Roman Catholicism from High Church Anglicanism. George Bernard Shaw, Chesterton's "friendly enemy" according to Time, said of him, "He was a man of colossal genius." Biographers have identified him as a successor to such Victorian authors as Matthew Arnold, Thomas Carlyle, Cardinal John Henry Newman, and John Ruskin.

Wit and Wisdom of the Apostle of Common Sense
By Michael Tozer
Gilbert Keith Chesterton is certainly one of the most entertaining, and important, authors in the English language. This particular volume covers quickly, yet completely, the history of England from early Roman times to the time of the Great War, World War I. Chesterton is a man, I suspect, who would have been very hard to dislike. Though brilliant, he always approached his many opponents with a keen sense of fun and empathy. But he is certainly a writer who, though sometimes challenging, is always enjoyable.

This wonderful, short, and thoroughly readable book can really be seen as a layman's philosophical representation of the great arc of English history. To grasp Chesterton's wit and wisdom entirely, it is probably important to have at least a nodding familiarity with English history before reading the book. But, so armed, the reader will be delighted with G.K.'s retelling of the great events of England, together with his insightful commentary relative to their import.

Particularly poignant is Chesterton's rendering of the martydom of Saint Joan of Arc. He avers that, at one time or another, perhaps all British soldiers would have traded places with the common British infantryman who broke his spear to make a cross for the dying Saint. This section alone is worth the price of the entire book.

Sharp and Insightful
By Dean K
If you love Chesterton, this work is full of the kind of cutting humor and cultural insight that is his best. The title is a bit misleading in the sense that this is more a "collection of essays on aspects of English History." It should also be seen as a critique of other popular histories of his day. However, he remains the best Christian apologist in the modern era and of the modern era.

A must for English Historians
By Chris Williams
Cheyney's work, though dated, is one of the most comprehensive history books I have ever seen. His detail from the Celts and geography to the reign of George V is remarkable. While many of the "MTV" generation may find it dry and without enough visuals, Cheyney was very precise in choosing which visuals would accentuate the text. He does this masterfully. This text should be updated to the reign of Elizabeth II and required in any British History course. As a teacher, I would strongly recommend every school that desires to give History its proper respect to buy this book for its teachers and libraries. Again, this book gives such rich detail to English History that it proves to be indispensable to any World History or English History class.

The art of Dreaming & the 2nd attention
By Dragan
July 2014: Since writing many book reviews of the past, this current review inclusive, much has changed, as I have discovered much. I have come to see and have had exposed many of the deceptions and errors associated with Gnosticism, this even after becoming a Gnostic priest. My faith in Jesus Christ has been my anchor and I press on with him who shed his blood for me. I am tempted to delete many of my reviews, as I have already done; time will tell.

This is the 5th book in the Carlos Castaneda series. One could read this book without having read the other books, but this would not be advisable. Here, Carlos returns to the deserts of Mexico in Search of Don Juan and meaning as to the events of the last book `Tales of Power'. The Nagual's, Don Juan and Don Genaro are not to be found. As is stated from the `editor's review', the first few chapters of this book deal with Carlos interacting with the sorceress Dona Soledad. Carlos's teachings continue not under the direction of these Nagual's, but with instruction left to the other disciples for Carlos Castaneda to work through. The interaction with these other disciples gives us a clearer understanding in the workings of Carlos Castaneda and Don Genaro.

This book presents us with `The art of dreaming' and `second attention'. Attention of Tonal "The capacity of average people to perceive and place their awareness on the ordinary world of everyday life. The first ring of power is our "awesome, but take-for-granted ability to impact order to our perception of our daily world." "The second domain (2nd ring of Power) was the attention of the Nagual; that is to say, the capacity of the sorcerer to place their awareness on the non-ordinary world". "Don Juan had said that our "first ring of power" is engaged very early in our lives and that we live under the impression that that is all there is to us. Our "Second ring of Power," the "attention of the Nagual," remains hidden for the immense majority of us, and only at the moment of our death is it revealed to us. There is a pathway to reach it, however, which is available to every one of us, but which only sorcerers take, and that pathway is through dreaming." "Dreaming" was in essence the transformation of ordinary dreams into affairs involving volition. Dreamers, by engaging their "attention of the Nagual" and focusing it on the items and events of their ordinary dreams, change those dreams into dreaming". Pg 278.

"First Attention, where we experience the Tonal, or the Second Attention where we experience the Nagual. To Castaneda the Tonal is often associated with the masculine aspect of the universe and the Nagual to the feminine. The Tonal can roughly be linked to the concept of Ego and the conscious mind." Wikipedia (Nagual Castaneda).

Carlos gives us the example of a table in the desert. The realm of the tonal deals with the objects placed upon the table. The 2nd ring of power of the Nagual, deals with standing back and becoming aware of all that goes beyond the table that is situated in a vast desert.

"The Nagual told me that human beings are frail creatures composed of many layers of luminosity. When you see them, they seem to have fibres, but those fibres are really layers, like an onion. Jolts of any kind separate those layers and can cause human beings to die" pg 290

"Sorcerers have to do their best to keep their own layers closed. That's why the Nagual taught us dreaming. Dreaming tightens the layers. When sorceress learn dreaming they tie together their tow attentions and there is no more need for that centre to push out". Do you mean that sorcerers do not die?" "That's right. Sorcerers do not die." Pg 291.

Carlos teaches us to access the second intention we should learn the art of gazing. For Carlos, Don Juan had taught to look into the distance without focusing onto specifics. In this book however we find that Don Juan has taught his other disciples the opposite depending upon the individual in question. Interesting to note here, for those that think that they can do the esoteric work themselves; having a master to guide us can pinpoint and expedite our progress depending upon our makeup, our personality etc. To one was given the task of gazing at a leaf (pg 294), a plant, a tree or rock; to another a fog or the rain (pg 297). "One could also gaze at water (still or running), smoke, fire or even a hung piece of cloth (pg 303).

"The difficulty in gazing is to learn to quiet down the thoughts. The Nagual said that he preferred to teach us how to do that with a pile of leaves because we could get all the leaves we needed any time we wanted to gaze. But anything else would do the same job. Once you stop the world you are a gazer. And since the only way of stopping the world was by trying, the Nagual made all of us gaze at leaves for years and years. I think it's the best way to reach our second attention. He combined gazing at dry leaves and looking for our hands in dreaming...The Nagual said that once you have trapped your second attention with dry leaves, you do gazing and dreaming to enlarge it. And that's all there is to gazing...The Nagual said that all we needed to do in order to trap our second attention was to try and try. All of us stopped the world by gazing at dry leaves." pg 295.

"The mad reign of King Monkey Mind can be overthrown by shifting the focus towards the second attention. The second attention can be cultivated by relaxing the search for meaning. This can be experienced by relaxing the tendency to project and/or assume meaning onto whatever is perceived, in lieu of direct perception of the phenomena. This can also occur by dropping labels through an agreement to experience the world without naming what you are experiencing. Infants and very young children see this way most of the time. This begins a process of flexing a perceptual muscle that was at one time active and vital before it weakened and/or atrophied." (Paratheatrical dot com)

"How do you learn?" "In my dreaming. Dreamers must gaze in order to do dreaming and then they must look for their dreams in their gazing. For example, the Nagual made me gaze at the shadows of rocks, and then in my dreaming I found out that those shadows had light, so I looked for the light in the shadows form then on until I found it. Gazing and dreaming go together". Pg 308. Selah.

Having read this book one is still left wondering what has happened to these two Nagual's that gone to another dimension. Guess I'll have to read the 6th book in the Carlos Castaneda series - `The eagle's gift'.

From Publishers Weekly
Grammar is a subject that typically induces wincing, wheezing, or worse. Clark, a lifelong whiz at the subject, wants readers to fully appreciate the importance of good grammar and the qualities of superior writing. To that end, he has laid out several entertaining, easy-to-follow rules, governing everything from punctuation to alliteration, that promise to dramatically improve one's writing and develop an appreciation for language. Clark draws on examples ranging from DeLillo to Rowling, a breadth of text that readers will appreciate as much as the author's humorous approach. Who knew that a discussion of grammar could induce laughter? This is an eminently readable, extremely enjoyable guide that readers will find highly useful on their path to development, not just as writers, but as readers.

"What I learned from this book:

1) That grammar has meant mastery of all arts and letters (to the Greeks) and power, magic, and enchantment (to the Scots). Wow.

2) That for the artful writer, no decision is too small, including whether to use a or the. Awesome.

3) That there are right-branching, left-branching, and middle-branching sentences. How cool!

4) That Roy Peter Clark, a modern-day Pied Piper of grammar, makes good writing both approachable and doable. Phew!"―Constance Hale, author of Sin and Syntax

"Who, other than a word-lover like Roy Peter Clark, would dare link "glamour" with (ugh) "grammar"? Here it is--a book of enchantment about words and how words work and what they mean and how to spell them, where even lowly semicolons get appreciated as "swinging gates" in a sentence. Who'd a thunk a book on grammar could be fun? And humorous. Check out "cleave" and "cleaveage.""―Sister Helen Prejean, author of Dead Man Walking

"If grammar is medicine, then Roy Clark gives us the spoonful of sugar to help it go down. A wonderful tour through the labyrinth of language."―Anne Hull, Pulitzer Prize-winning reporter, The Washington Post

"If 'Euphemisms are unpleasant truths wearing diplomatic cologne,' as Quentin Crisp once said, then Ralph Keyes has given word and language lovers a deeply fragrant-and thoroughly enjoyable-book."―Dr. Mardy Grothe, author of Oxymoronica and other quotation anthologies

"Roy Peter Clark takes the language so seriously he dares to play with it. What other English professor would seriously write 'A good pun is its own reword.' Somehow, Clark makes grammar seem both playful and understandable, even for those who have trouble telling the difference between a dangling participle and a wandering antecedent."―Thomas French, author of Zoo Story

A must-read for anyone who wants to write
By Sheila Deeth
So, what do you think about when you hear the word "grammar"? As a kid, I would think "Uh oh; I guess I wrote something wrong again." As a young adult I'd say, "Hey, that's just the way I speak." As an Englishwoman moving to America I'd groan that it's not just the spellings that are different here but the grammar rules as well. And after reading this book I'd say, "Wow!"

So, what about my punctuation above? Why did I put that question mark outside the quotes when the exclamation point went inside at the end of the paragraph? I'd often wondered how to punctuate quotes, and since I want to be a writer, I'd often thought I really ought to learn. At last I have.

Clark's book starts by pointing out that "glamour" and "grammar" come from the same root. I guess is makes sense. After all, we "spell" words correctly or otherwise, and wizards cast "spells." Grammar's just the next step.

I used to teach chess, and I'd explain to the kids that there are two types of rules. Some have to be obeyed (pawns move forwards for example), or else you're not playing chess. Others are there to be understood and used judiciously (such as "Don't get your queen out too soon") to set or avoid falling into traps. Once you know the rules, you know what it means when they're broken.

Spelling's probably the first sort of rule, and Clark includes a chapter on how meanings can change where the wrong spelling or wrong word is used. Suddenly you're not saying what you thought; your reader's dragged out of the writing; you're not playing the same game. But other grammar rules can be judiciously broken. We just have to know what we're doing and why--be prepared for what the reader will see, and be ready to make sure it's what we intend.

Clark's chapters are written with delightful style, great voice, amazing examples, and just pure fun. (Yes, grammar can be fun!) There's advice for aspiring writers that any of us could use--the value of the well-chosen long or short word, the nuances of sound or foreign phrase, the alliteration of short and long sentences... And then there are chapter endings with quick and easily read "Keepsakes." There he might emphasize a point, help the reader practice a technique, or simply list the rules. (That's how I learned how to punctuate my first paragraph.)

Clark doesn't want to regiment our writing. He acknowledges how different countries (UK and US for example), industries (newspaper vs book), and even publishers have their own chosen styles. Obey the rules of your intended audience he says. But then he frees us to shift those chess pieces round and win the game.

Is grammar glamorous? It certainly is now. I love this book, and I'd recommend that everyone who loves reading or writing really should read it. I can hardly believe how lucky I was to get a copy to review--you'll hardly believe how lucky you are if you get your own copy too. And, just for reference, since Roy Peter Clark is vice president and senior scholar at the Poynter Institute, I have no qualms about trusting him to give me, and you, the right facts.

Roy Clark's Glamorous Grammar
By Donald K. Fry
Roy Clark's new book, The Glamour of Grammar, is none of the following:
* A treatise on grammar
* A guide to grammar and style
* Competition for Strunk and White
* A volume of snarling "do nots."
Roy loves words and wants you to love them too in ways that will help you as a writer. He burrows beneath English words to show you their deep roots and reverberations. The "Glamour" in his title refers to magic powers, both in historical origins and modern persuasiveness. This book will enrich what you hear and what you write.

Grammar is Awesome!
By Amazon Customer
Learn to lie or lay,
as well as the principles behind the distinction,
Turn a language problem into a language lesson: lie
means "recline" and lay means"to place"
But in Hawaii, expect a lei.
(from the back cover)

With a lesson like the one above, how could you possibly go wrong with this book. While I've always been incredibly interested in the English language, reading this book turns it from an interesting subject to a fascinating one. If you only buy one book to help you write better, this would be the one.

Some people are born writers. Others of us learn to write by reading how other people write, and by practice. This is a book to keep on your nightstand (if you use your laptop in bed like I do) or on your desk (if you're a "real" writer (LOL!)) as you're writing (or before you start). There are so many practical lessons to be learned. Clark didn't write a book that you're supposed to read from start to finish. You could literally open the book in the middle, find the beginning of a passage and start reading. You're going to learn a new technique (like using shorter sentences to stretch out the story). Or you could start at the beginning and read a mini lesson at a time. Either way, you're not going to want to put the book down. It's just that good.

Although it's like going to English class all over again, it's so much better. While Mrs. Brusnwick was one of my favorite teachers, class did get a little, umm, boring. To be fair, Mr. Harris really tried to teach me that advanced math stuff, but I wasn't smart enough then. I'll still not smart enough.

A Brilliant Collection of Essays
By Todd and In Charge
Gore was in rare form in the 80s, inspired by the Reagan Revolution and the rise of the Christian Right and their focus on Israel and the impending Armageddon.

His essays collected here, mostly from the New York Review of Books and the London Times literary supplement, range from devastatingly funny looks at Nixon and the Reagans, the rise of armageddon cultural politics, as well as simply brilliant essays on writing, Calvino, Dawn Powell, Paul Bowles and others.

Each one takes you immediately inside Vidal's head, and his voice becomes yours as you savor every witty and insightful observation. A national treasure.

Canaille oblige
By Luc REYNAERT
Gore Vidal gives us superbly vitriolic portraits of Richard Nixon and Ronald Reagan, as well as of the Christian Right's Armageddon: 'Why conserve anything, if Judgment Day is at hand.'

But he sees through the rhetoric and the hypocrisy the real America of humming electric chairs and well-packed prisons. A US controlled by an oligarchical system where men of property can do well and the others are on their own; where the New Rich made their money with defence contracts, the circulus vitiosus 'transfer money from the Treasury to the various defence contractors which in turn pay for the election of Congress and President'; where the Pentagon is a black hole for wasted money while the public educational system is deteriorating because of a lack of investment.

On the moral side, he remarks perspicuously that 'In order for a ruling class to rule, there must be arbitrary prohibitions. Of all prohibitions, sexual taboo is the most useful because sex involves everyone.'

But this book contains also some remarkable essays on world literature: Henry James ('monsters have triumphed yet again'); William Dean Howells ('a darkness sufficiently sable for even the most lost-and-found of literary generations'); Logan Pearsall Smith ('idiom before grammar'); Paul Bowles ('the strangeness and terror of waking dreams'); Tennesse Williams ('he certainly believed in sin'); Italo Calvino ('the many in the one'); Anthony Burgess ('3 obsessions: religion-art-sex').

A book of a remarkable observer and analyzer.

We need his voice.

Beauchamp covers a lot of ground
By K
This is a required text for an undergraduate level business ethics class. I was pleased with the condition of the book. It had not been written in or high-lighted. I will probably use it for reference in the future. It's content is very comprehensive.

It's the text book of California Southern University MBA course. The contents are comprehensive.

I bought a used book in Amazon. It was very cheap. A new one is about $130. I bought the used one at about $10. I live in Seoul, South Korea. So overseas parcel service fee was about $30. I paid only $40 for this. Wow, what a deal!

And it took only 4~5 days to deliver it to me from USA to South Korea. How amazing! I felt as if I lived in USA.

The book was used, but it's in great shape. Very good!

Review

An extremely useful and wide-ranging collection of essays devoted to a topic often ignored or taken for granted by visually-dominated studies of the moving picture...

(Gerald Mast, University of Chicago)

Both comprehensive in its choice of readings and creative in its editorial approach... Film Sound, as well as being an eminent introduction to the writings in the field, forcefully demonstrates the need for the study of the media to be both textually and institutionally grounded, and both theoretically and historically informed.

(Richard Allen Framework)

Indispensable... [a] superb collection of essays.... An important contribution to our literature on film theory and practice and... necessary reading for anyone interested in the art and the practice of filmmaking.

(Journal of Popular Film and Television)

Film Sound is a pleasure to read. In addition, the book's general organization and range of selections present an accurate summary of the development of film sound and attitudes toward it from the late twenties to the eighties. For anyone interested in finding ways out of the present theoretical confusion, Film Sound is an excellent place to start.

(Film Quarterly)

Convincingly suggests that an exciting new field has been opened up, one that may well come to determine the way we look at the cinema as a whole.... [Film Sound] pays attention to the new technologies as they affect not only the cinema but also how we come to view its history.

(Sight and Sound)

From the Back Cover
The only comprehensive book on film sound, this anthology makes available for the first time and in a single volume major essays by the most respected film historians, aestheticians, and theorists of the past sixty years.

She has written or edited books on sound, comedy, and star acting. Ear-opening
By T. Nicholas
I got this book because after 4 years of film school, I still felt as if I had been shortchanged when it came to learning sound design. I had been taught how to record and edit sound, been taught how to do ADR, been taught all the different types of microphones; but I still didn't know WHY to use one type of microphone over another, WHY using an omnidirectional, or a shotgun, or a lavalier mic would change the feel of a scene (and how this would in turn change depending on whether that sound was being matched with a closeup or a long shot). In short, I was never taught the aesthetic significance behind any of the options I was presented with. My formal education on the topic had been entirely technical. As the editors make clear in the preface to this anthology, it was their attempt to compile a book "addressed to aestheticians rather than technicians." At this they've done an incredible job.

The scope is broad - covering theory, practice, history, as well as the technological side - different essays focusing on individual films, directors, genres, historical periods or the medium as a whole. The viewpoints of the authors are also as diverse as anything you'll find in film studies generally, ranging from Marxist, formalist and psychoanalytic analysis to more straightforward historical or technical writing.

As a filmmaker, this book has been eye opening (or should I say ear opening?). For the first time I am finally able to think about sound design in the same way that I think about any other element of a film. Since starting to read the book, I've paid more attention to the sound design in all of the films I've watched.

This book was written in 1985. No doubt does this mean that innovations in the field since 1985 (most notably the dawn of digital editing and sound mixing) are left out from the book. But even so, if you are a filmmaker who is looking to gain some insight into what film sound is all about, this is an excellent place to start.

Orphan Train Rider: One Boy's True Story, by Andrea Warren

Between 1854 and 1930, more than 200,000 orphaned or abandoned children were sent west on orphan trains to find new homes. Some were adopted by loving families; others were not as fortunate. In recent years, some of the riders have begun to share their stories. Andrea Warren alternates chapters about the history of the orphan trains with the story of Lee Nailling, who in 1926 rode an orphan train to Texas when he was nine years old.

Grade 4-8?Between 1854 and 1930, more than 200,000 orphaned and abandoned children from the cities of the eastern seaboard were "placed out" to new homes and families in the midwest and western states. Warren's account of the "orphan-train" phenomena, and of one man's story of how it affected his life, is an excellent introduction to researching or discussing children-at-risk in an earlier generation. The book is clearly written and illustrated with numerous black-and-white photographs and reproductions. The chapters alternate information about the largest agency, the Children's Aid Society, and its history, with the story of Lee Nailling, from whom the author has gathered the facts of his own childhood journey to Texas and his eventual reunion, late in life, with some of his long-lost siblings. Human interest is skillfully interspersed with factual information to create a fascinating book about a social movement that predated today's foster homes, adoption agencies, and homeless shelters. Annette R. Fry's The Orphan Trains (New Discovery, 1994) is written for the same age group and efficiently provides detailed information for research and reports. Eve Bunting's Train to Somewhere (Clarion, 1996), a picture book, tells the story for younger children. Together these books offer opportunities for discussion about the sometimes happy and sometimes misguided efforts to care for the orphaned and abandoned in our country's past. But if only one book can be acquired, Warren's title offers a wealth of information and is rich in human interest. It should be the primary purchase.?Shirley Wilton, Ocean County College, Toms River, NJ

Gr. 4^-6. From 1854 to 1930, the orphan trains took homeless children from cities in the East to new homes in the West, the Midwest, and the South. In Warren's book, one man's memories of his childhood abandonment and adoption give a personal slant on the subject. Chapters telling the story of Lee Nailing, who took an orphan train west in 1926, alternate with chapters filling in background information about the trains and the experiences of other children who rode them to their destinies. Throughout the book, black-and-white photos show both the people and places in Nailing's story and the broader topic of the orphan train experience. Children will find this a good resource on an intriguing subject. Carolyn Phelan

A Wonderful True Story!
By Mary Burnight
This book is well written with much historical information about the time of Orphan Trains. What I enjoyed among the chapters was the train ride of Lee Nailing, then his adult life which ensued his growing up....but most of all, I just loved to know of his first week in Texas and his eventual beginning 2 days with the Nailing family: so interesting for me to see him rise above bitterness within a supportive family!

Orphan Train Rider: One Boy's True Story
By Kindle Customer
Interesting subject but not presented well.
Also I was extremely disappointed in discovering this was not a "full size" book, but a mere 80 page story. I was shocked when I reached the last page, expecting the story to develop further. I even reviewed the book thinking I must have missed several chapters somehow.
It was my error for not checking how long the book was before I ordered, but I definitely feel short changed.
