The Geography of Nowhere: The Rise and Decline of America's Man-Made Landscape, by James Howard Kunstler

The Geography of Nowhere traces America's evolution from a nation of Main Streets and coherent communities to a land where every place is like no place in particular, where the cities are dead zones and the countryside is a wasteland of cartoon architecture and parking lots.
In elegant and often hilarious prose, Kunstler depicts our nation's evolution from the Pilgrim settlements to the modern auto suburb in all its ghastliness. The Geography of Nowhere tallies up the huge economic, social, and spiritual costs that America is paying for its car-crazed lifestyle. It is also a wake-up call for citizens to reinvent the places where we live and work, to build communities that are once again worthy of our affection. Kunstler proposes that by reviving civic art and civic life, we will rediscover public virtue and a new vision of the common good. "The future will require us to build better places," Kunstler says, "or the future will belong to other people in other societies."

From Publishers Weekly
In this inconsistent but provocative analysis, Kunstler ( Blood Solstice ), a novelist and journalist, mixes memoir, historical essay and reporting to condemn the car-dependent suburbanization of America. Kunstler, who writes ably, casts a very wide net: he finds the roots of American individualism in pre-colonial property ownership, decries the abstracting influence of modernism on city architecture and slams road-builder Robert Moses to support his contention that suburbia is a social environment without soul. He offers an intriguing history of the decline of Saratoga Springs, N.Y., his hometown, describes trips to failing Detroit and well-planned Portland, Ore., and dissects "capitals of unreality" like Disney World and Atlantic City. His worthy but sketchily described solutions--a sustainable economy, better neighborhood development and preservation of the countryside--could, however, each merit a book.

From Library Journal
In this spirited, irreverent critique, Kunstler spares none of the culprits that have conspired in the name of the American Dream to turn the U.S. landscape from a haven of the civic ideal into a nightmare of crass commercial production and consumption. Kunstler strips the bark off the utopian social engineering promoted by the machine-worshiping Modern movement of Gropius, Le Corbusier, and Frank Lloyd Wright and skewers the intellectual camps (e.g., Venturi) that have thrived on making academic glory of the consumer wasteland. With the fervor of an investigative reporter and in the vernacular of a tabloid journalist, Kunstler exposes the insidious "car lobby" and gives case studies of landscapes as diverse as Detroit, Atlantic City, and Seaside, Florida, to illustrate both the woes and hopeful notes. The ideas in this book are not new (Jane Jacobs and William H. Whyte Jr. were bemoaning the loss of civic life a quarter-century ago), but Kunstler gives their case an urgent, popular voice. An eminently relevant and important book; highly recommended.

From Kirkus Reviews
It's no news that many Americans live in a spread-out, privatized suburban wasteland without community or centers; that much landscape has given way to ugly sprawl; that this condition may be due to systematic policies on the part of government and industrial forces; and that the automobile is the engine that has driven us there. What novelist Kunstler (The Halloween Ball, 1987, etc.) does here is to explore and deplore these developments. Kunstler traces, from the nation's beginnings, the implications of changing architecture styles; the manifestations of our extreme emphasis on private-property rights and low regard for the public realm; and the destruction that our car-centered life has visited on American communities in general and certain profiled older towns and cities in particular. His discussions of specific places--chosen to represent such concepts as an ``old industrial metropolis gone to hell'' (Detroit); ``how to mess up a town'' (Saratoga Springs, New York); the ``most hopeful and progressive trends in...urban planning'' (Portland, Oregon); and sinister commercial myth-mongering that distorts small-town reality (Disney World)--lack the original ideas, cutting analysis, and stimulating insights that characterized last year's Variations on a Theme Park (ed., Michael Sorkin). But for a more popular audience, Kunstler provides an accessible overview that's all the more interesting and effective for his frankly expressed and all-enveloping viewpoint. If his attachment to the small towns of the past seems an insufficient answer to the problems of the present and future, his depiction of those problems is on target. And the author makes a persuasive case for convicting the private automobile of a gamut of 20th-century ills: the Great Depression; the death of the cities and of the family farm; the trashy consumerism that has driven the economy since the end of WW II; voodoo economics; the S&L crisis; and global environmental degradation. An informative and well-integrated polemic. -- Copyright ©1993, Kirkus Associates, LP. All rights reserved.

revolutionary
By Shannon B.
Geography of Nowhere is a wonderful, life-changing book. I wish I could make every developer, every SUV owner and every town council read this book. Its main topic is the physical environments that Americans live in, in contrast to our historical environments and to overseas. Kunstler shows how the advent of the automobile has changed the face of cities, small-towns and birthed the suburb. The choice to live without an automobile is now a very difficult one for most people, and also comes with certain social assumptions. Yet, after reading Geography of Nowhere, I am seeking ever more ways to take public transportation and reduce my reliance on a vehicle that both pollutes the natural environment and despoils the man-made environment.
Some chapters in the book focus on cities gone wrong, such as Detroit. Others discuss the ideal community, involving mixed-use neighborhoods (both purpose - commercial, residential, industrial - and class - working, professional, wealthy). Kunstler makes the case that prior to the development of suburbia and the reign of automobiles as our primary form of transportation, we had a kinder, cleaner, and happier world. Disney World's Main Street was used as an example of how car-free neighborhoods have become an American dream, and at the same time, few people understand why cars have had such a negative effect.
Geography of Nowhere has confirmed my choice to live in a city with public transportation, in a mixed-use neighborhood, within walking distance of most of my needs. It may be more expensive and it may be unconventional, but I now have the evidence to back up my convictions.

A Refreshing Book
By rex tugwell
No, this book isn't the most scholarly approach to urban planning. But is a much needed book. One of the problems with the myriad of books that have emerged lately on the topic of modern urban design is that they are written in academic speak, not readily understandable by the layman or laywoman who is attempting to make a difference while serving on town boards. Although no one has mentioned it in these reviews, it was gutsy of the author to propose that a building could be objectively ugly. This is important to those of us who are sick and tired of trying to tell developers that we don't want another McDonalds because the golden arches don't relate to the spacial relationships of our sidewalks. Damn it, we have the right to reject it because its plug ugly. His comments on Disney were wicked, accurate, and entirely true. Read this book.

The Land of Denny's
By N. P. Stathoulopoulos
Kunstler is not too happy with how we've built our cities, our suburbs, and our society. And I can't blame him.

This is an important consideration of how the landscapes of America have changed, and not for the best. The decline of American cities, the rise of the never-ending suburban sprawls, the addiction to cars and to oil and highways, all contribute to the decay of social fabric.

It all sounds deep, but Kunstler is clearly onto something. Himself transplanted to the suburbs of Long Island, Kuntsler is angry at what he sees as an America that is less and less concerned with maintaining any lasting community, anywhere.

All you have to do in this country is go to a few different cities and look around. First off, you can hardly distinguish most big cities from each other in the US--you have a downtown (in some cases among the worst part of a particular city, and often deserted and bland) and you have the endless suburban sprawl. What you find is isolation, isolation, isolation. Pick a big city, and you see the problems still being faced decades after population shifts, demographic changes, cultural changes etc: Detroit, Atlanta, St Louis, Miami, etc, etc.

Architecture is in the dumps, as short-term profit is the motivating factor behind flat, faceless and featureless buildings. Suburbia has long been the answer for many: miles of designed streets with identical houses, cut off from undesirables by miles of highway, encouraging an inefficient life where everything is separated, the car has replaced the PERSON as the unit we build for, to say nothing of the cultural wasteland half of America becomes with the influx of 100 fast food chains, a Walmart, a mall, an 'entertainment complex', etc, destroying anything that once gave a place character.

The notion of public space is different in America than elsewhere. Here, we don't seem to think much of it. While it may enrage some folks to compare ourselves to Europe and its cities, Kunstler points out that European cities are built to last, so to speak. Public space is respected and cherished, cities are built around people and for people, and so what if you don't have a Chili's, an Outback Steakhouse, a Radioshack, a Best Buy, a Wal Mart, etc, etc everywhere.

Even in New York you see the chains have moved in to stay, the blandness extends to every facet of life. At least you can walk out the buildings here and walk on a street and see people, unless of course, you don't want to see anyone except those who are exactly like you.

Important stuff, and God-forbid, thought-provoking.

A Classic on Inter-Arab Politics
By Joshua M. Landis
Patrick Seale's "Struggle for Syria" should be one of the first books anyone interested in Syria or the Middle East reads. It is a crime that Yale UP has allowed it to go out of print. Seale was the first Middle East specialist to give us a comprehensive and extremely lively explanation of how the emerging Arab state system actually worked. What is more, he tied it deftly and imaginatively to the domestic politics of the region - something no one had done so well at the time, and few have come close to emulating since. It is as relevant today as it was in 1965.

Seale was one of the best reporters in the Middle East during the 1960s and remains so today. He interviewed just about every politician and military figure of importance in Syria, where his father taught, and he grew up. His Arabic and French are fluent, and his 6th sense for what makes people tick is unerring.

Some have accused Seale of being soft on Arab nationalism and the early Ba`thists, but no one can claim he didn't know them and understand their view of the world. Every Syria specialist owes Seale a tremendous debt. With out him, we would know half of what we do of Syrian politics in the 20th century. Most of our works are but dull shadows of his. All of us start by contending with his arguments and evidence. I spent years in archives in Washington, London, France, and Syria going over the diplomatic correspondence for the period he wrote about. He never made a mistake of fact. It is quite amazing. So many others did - or they missed important elements of the story.

Seale's biography of Hafiz al-Asad also remains the best book on contemporary Syria. But the Struggle for Syria is a true masterpiece.

Molecular Basis of Viral and Microbial Pathogenesis, by R. Rott

Elucidation of the mechanisms of pathogenesis underlying the diseases caused by viruses and bacteria has fascinated scientists for many years in two ways. Firstly, these pathogenic agents represent relatively sim ple biological systems for the study of basic biological processes such as replication, gene regulation, genetic variability and host-pathogen interactions. Secondly, process in this field is valuable in a practi cal sence, since it can help in the control of these diseases. The avail ability of new genetic and immunological techniques, especially recom binant DNA methods and monoclonal antibody technology, has provided powerful tools for unravelling the genetic, biochemical and immunologi cal basis of viral and microbial pathogenesis. Molecular cloning has allowed the isolation of single genes or groups of genes related to phenotypes which appear to be immunologically important for pathogene sis. The specific elimination of such genes from the complex genomes of the pathogens can now be achieved with similar genetic techniques. These genetic studies have provided additional information on the role played by specific phenotypic traits in pathogenesis, especially when combined with relevant animal model systems. Furthermore, the struc tural analysis of important virulence factors and surface antigens may allow the prediction of antigenic domains suitable for the development of new vaccines. The 38th Mosbacher Colloquium focuses on the molecular basis of viral and microbial pathogenesis. The virology part begins with the well studied plant viroids. The unusual structure of their genome, as well as knowledge about their replication and pathogenicity, are presented.

Don't Even Think About It: Why Our Brains Are Wired to Ignore Climate Change, by George Marshall

Most of us recognize that climate change is real yet we do nothing to stop it. What is the psychological mechanism that allows us to know something is true but act as if it is not? George Marshall's search for the answers brings him face to face with Nobel Prize-winning psychologists and Texas Tea Party activists; the world's leading climate scientists and those who denounce them; liberal environmentalists and conservative evangelicals. What he discovers is that our values, assumptions, and prejudices can take on lives of their own, gaining authority as they are shared, dividing people in their wake.

With engaging stories and drawing on years of his own research, Marshall argues that the answers do not lie in the things that make us different, but rather in what we share: how our human brains are wired--our evolutionary origins, our perceptions of threats, our cognitive blind spots, our love of storytelling, our fear of death, and our deepest instincts to defend our family and tribe. Once we understand what excites, threatens, and motivates us, we can rethink climate change, for it is not an impossible problem. Rather, we can halt it if we make it our common purpose and common ground. In the end, Don't Even Think About It is both about climate change and about the qualities that make us human and how we can deal with the greatest challenge we have ever faced.

Review

“[Marshall] offers advice on confronting climate change head on, stepping away from Green Guilt, and putting potentially world-saving policies into action.” ―The Boston Globe

“Intelligent and genial . . . In the end, Marshall is neither fatalistic nor idealistic about our chances of survival. Yes, he says, we're wired to ignore climate change. But we're also wired to do something about it.” ―Washington Post

“Clearly we're not responding to the reality of climate change with the speed the crisis requires. This book explains some of the reasons that could be--and how we might work around them in the short time that we have.” ―Bill McKibben, author of Eaarth

“The science of climate change is easy: burning fossil fuels creates greenhouse gasses that are warming our world. George Marshall reminds us about the hard part: connecting the wellhead to the tailpipe in people's minds as soon as possible. Please read this book, and think about it. Let's get to work.” ―Bill Nye

“Illuminating and important--makes clear why we continue down a dangerous path of increasing climate disruption, even when attractive, hospitable, alternative paths are available.” ―James Hansen, author of Storms of My Grandchildren and Former Director of NASA Goddard Institute for Space Studies

“George Marshall is one of the most interesting, challenging and original thinkers on the psychology of our collective climate denial. If his advice were heeded, we might just have the courage to look unblinkingly at this existential crisis, and then to act.” ―Naomi Klein, author of This Changes Everything and The Shock Doctrine

“Enlightening.” ―Publishers Weekly

“A real soul searching challenge for us all. Marshall illuminates the path to embarking on a heroic quest for a just and equitable world. A sobering, yet hopeful book.” ―Frank DiSalvo, Director of the Atkinson Center for a Sustainable Future, Cornell University

“In 42 engaging, bite-size chapters, Marshall presents the psychological research demonstrating why climate change simply doesn't feel dangerous enough to justify action and how we can trick our brains into changing our sense of urgency about the problem. His work is a much needed kick in the pants for policymakers, grassroots environmentalists, and the public to induce us to develop effective motivational tools to help us take action to face the reality of climate change before it's too late.” ―Booklist

“Fantastic.” ―Grist

“Essential reading for everyone interested in communicating the science of climate change and its urgent policy implications.” ―Critical Angle

“This is not a book to read and put away--but one that merits returning to and engaging with intellectually. Is there a higher compliment that one can give an author?” ―Daily Kos

Or How to go beyond preaching to the choir
By Mark P. Archambault
In this timely and urgently needed book, George Marshall sets out to answer several questions that he poses in the opening chapter: "What explains out ability to separate what we know from what we believe, to put aside the things that seem too painful to accept? How is it possible, when presented with the evidence of our own eyes, that we can deliberately ignore something - while being entirely aware that this is what we are doing?"

Over the course of the book, he explores the psychological and social traits that served us well over millions of years of our evolution on the savannas of Africa, but which are not serving us so well now. These include confirmation bias, present (time) focus, social conformity, group think, procrastination, valuing the messenger over the message, and the different functioning of the rational and emotional brains. He explores these issues with several psychologists and sociologists, who generally believe that climate change is "a threat that our evolved brains are uniquely unsuited to do a damned thing about", as put by Harvard Professor of Psychology Daniel Gilbert.

In order to gain the widest possible perspective on these issues, the author immersed himself into cultures that many environmentalists would consider the belly of the beast of denialism, such as Tea Party meetings and evangelical church congregations. That he is able to uncover important lessons on climate change communication from such unlikely sources is a testament to his open mindedness and humility. He believes we need to listen to everyone, and engage them on their level.

He also points out how many of the approaches taken by environmental activists have proven to be counterproductive, if the goal is to move beyond preaching to the choir. Perhaps the most important of these is the tendency of environmentalists to adhere to the "information deficit" model of communication, which is the belief that if just the right information is provided to people, that they will see the light and act upon that knowledge. Much of the content of the book consists of showing just how completely untrue this is.

He discusses how the early framing of climate change as primarily an environmental issue has caused it to become politicized, which suits the fossil fuel lobby just fine. Those whose social groups reject environmentalism as mainly the purview of egg-headed liberal elites (e.g. Al Gore), have come to distrust the message of human caused climate change because they distrust the messengers.

The author does provide recommendations for effective climate change communication, but without giving away the whole story, this quote on the need to engage both the rational and emotional aspects of our psyches sums them up well: "So, advocates for action on climate change have to do everything they can to speak to both. They need to maintain enough data and evidence to satisfy the rational mind that they are a credible source. They then need to translate that data into a form that will engage and motivate the emotional brain using the tools of immediacy, proximity, social meaning, stories and metaphors that draw on personal experience."

The book is well structured, with many easy to read short chapters that make for easy pacing. He also provides two summary chapters that distill the many points he makes, which I found very useful. My one recommendation is that grouping the 42 short chapters into larger sections would be useful in terms of grasping the information on a higher organizational level.

I believe this book is a must read for everyone involved in communicating about climate change. I propose that we place copies of this book in time capsules around the world, so that in the event our civilization does not heed its messages, at least future survivors will know why.

Incredible Original, Insightful and Funny AND Helpful for Climate Activists from All Points of View
By mark twain
If you are concerned with effectively communicating climate change, this book is a MUST READ -- not an exaggeration. Marshall has a set of incredibly original and insightful approaches to looking at why the issue has been divisive rather than universally mobilizing. Also it's pretty accessible in style, relatively short chapters, and often extremely funny. It's a book for communicators, activists, students of climate change history, and mostly, people who want to make sure we move forward ensuring the best future. It's a book that brings people together rather than divides. It's a book that makes hope feel possible beginning at the level of communication, which is where all other hope may begin as well too. It also shines a mirror onto how greenies need to give up "ownership" of Climate Change so everyone can feel equally entitled to claim it from many varied perspectives. Don't Even Think About It will hopefully become a critical book in the history of mass-market climate change books-- read it, give it as a gift, assign it in classes. Let's start making the change.

Essential reading for understanding how we think about, communicate, and work on climate change
By C. Luc Reid
In this deeply researched and surprising book, Marshall helps us understand the true nature of climate change and why it's so hard for us to act on something that threatens to destroy us.

His points are surprising and force us to reframe our entire understanding of the issue. Here are a few examples, many of which don't make sense until you get the benefit of Marshall's full explanation:

* Climate change is not a tame problem, but a "wicked" one.
* Climate change is not an environmental problem.
* Fossil fuel companies must be stopped, but they are not the enemy.
* Polar bears and our grandchildren are not the ones who need to be saved.
* Conservatives are not the enemies of climate change action, but essential allies.
* Guilt over our personal contributions to climate change and fear of what will happen are our biggest opponents.
* Climate change is not in any sense a religion, but evangelical churches may be our best models for learning how to communicate about it.

I had some anxiety as I read this book, not so much because it's about climate change, but because for the first 40 chapters or so, Marshall tells us only how NOT to communicate about climate change: why politically loaded messages hurt the cause, how making the problem scarier encourages us to ignore it even more, and how the science isn't going to convince much of anyone, for instance. I was afraid that I was going to get to the end of the book and find out that his conclusion was "So basically, we're f***ed."

Thankfully, it wasn't. At the end of the book, Marshall revisits all his key points and turns them on their heads, showing how the things we're doing wrong in communicating climate change can maybe be done differently and effectively. It's not that those of us who are working to solve the climate change problem aren't trying hard enough to communicate: it's that there's an entirely different and unexpected way for us to go about it that is likely, based on a great deal of research and investigation, to do a much, much better job.

We tend to understand climate change in limited ways, each of us confined to some extent by our peers and expectations. Marshall's book helps us break out of those limited understandings to see the big picture, and in the process to find new resolve, new allies, and new hope for immediate change.

About the Author
Jane W. Ball graduated from the Johns Hopkins Hospital School of Nursing, and subsequently received a B.S. from the Johns Hopkins University. She worked in the surgical, emergency, and outpatient units of the Johns Hopkins Children's Medical and Surgical Center, first as a staff nurse and then as a pediatric nurse practitioner. This began her career as a pediatric nurse and advocate for children's health needs. Jane obtained both a master of public health and doctor of public health degree from the Johns Hopkins University Bloomberg School of Public Health with a focus on maternal and child health. After graduation she became the chief of child health services for the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania Department of Health. In this capacity she oversaw the state-funded well-child clinics and explored ways to improve education for the state's community health nurses. After relocating to Texas, she joined the faculty at the University of Texas at Arlington School of Nursing to teach community pediatrics to registered nurses returning to school for a BS.N. During this time she became involved in writing her first textbook, Mosby's Guide to Physical Examination, which is currently in its sixth edition. After relocating to the Washington, D.C., area, she joined Children's National Medical Center to manage a federal project to teach instructors of emergency medical technicians from all states about the special care children need during an emergency. Exposure to the shortcomings of the emergency medical services system in the late 1980s with regard to pediatric care was a career-changing event. With federal funding, she developed educational curricula for emergency medical technicians and emergencynurses to help them provide improved care for children. A textbook entitled Pediatric Emergencies, A Manual for Prehospital Providers was developed from these educational ventures. For 15 years she has managed the federally funded Emergency Medical Services for Children National Resource Center. As executive director, Dr. Ball directed the provision of consultation and resource development for state health agencies, health professionals, families, and advocates about successful methods to improve the health care system so that children get optimal emergency care in all health care settings. . She recently left this position to devote more time to writing and to become a consultant on emergency medical services and state trauma system development. Ruth C. McGillis Bindler received her B.S.N. from Cornell. University-New York Hospital School of Nursing in New York. She worked in oncology nursing at Memorial-Sloan Kettering Cancer Center in New York, and then moved to Wisconsin and became a public health nurse in Dane County, Wisconsin. Thus began her commitment to work with children as she visited children and their families at home, and served as a school nurse for several elementary, middle, and high schools. Due to this interest in child healthcare needs, she earned her MS. in child development from the University of Wisconsin. A move to Washington State was accompanied by a new job as a faculty member at the Intercollegiate Center for Nursing Education in Spokane, Washington. Dr. Bindler has been fortunate to be involved for over 30 years in the growth of this nursing education consortium, which is a combination of public and private universities and colleges and is now the WashingtonState University/Intercollegiate College of Nursing. She has taught theory and clinical courses in child health nursing, cultural diversity and health, graduate research, pharmacology, and assessment, as well as serving as lead faculty for child health nursing. She is presently interim associate dean for the college's graduate programs. Her first professional book, "Pediatric Medications," was published in 1981, and she has continued to publish articles and books in the areas of pediatric medications and pediatric health. Research efforts are focused in the area of childhood obesity, type 2 diabetes, metabolic syndrome, and cardiovascular risk factors in children. Ethnic diversity has been another theme in her work. She facilitates international and other diversity experiences for students and performs research with culturally diverse children. Dr. Bindler believes that her role as a faculty member has enabled her to learn continually, to foster the development of students in nursing, and to participate fully in the profession of nursing. In addition to teaching, research, publication, and leadership, she enhances her life by service in several professional and community activities, and by activities with her family.

No access for mynursinglab!
By Skbean20
This book is listed as being part of the my lab series, but it has no access to the mynursinglab. You either have to purchase it separately on the website, or purchase this book in the ebook version, where it does come with it. They should really take the my lab series off the description.

If you must do Peds, this works!
By lesa1219
This textbook is easy to read, organized very well, excellent graphics, pics of real stuff. I am child-free and wasn't looking forward to doing my Peds section of nursing school but it wasn't bad at all. The book was very good, and I'm a student that reads everything. A lot of students don't, but, I have used my text extensively. One caveat is that the book can be used with publisher website, which offers a study tool called My Nursing Lab and has lots of questions to answer. I found MANY discrepanies between the answers to those questions and what I found in the textbook. This is kinda a big deal because when one bothers memorizing something as fact and misses it on a test question later, fire will come out of one's head and she will spend days questioning her decision to go to nursing school in her 40s while her husband eats Subway three days in a row. . Proofreading and double, triple checking answer keys makes a difference in students' lives. I also appreciated the many references to alternative parenting/lifestyles, kids' needs who may be LGBT, and discussion of the challenges faced by differing socioeconomic status. No blame or judgment tone as there are in many other texts. The book itself is very good, didn't put me to sleep once!

Good book

The book came in the condition described. It is an easy read but it would have been nice if the authors incorporated more pictures of abnormalities. The website wasn't helpful, you have to pay money for the extra material.

Tocotrienols: Vitamin E Beyond Tocopherols, Second EditionFrom Brand: CRC Press

The first 90 years of vitamin E research has produced prolific and notable discoveries, but until the last few decades, attention has been given mostly to the biological activities and underlying mechanisms of alpha-tocopherol, which we now know is one of more than eight vitamin E isomers. Currently, the non-tocopherol vitamin E molecule tocotrienol has reached a new measure of research height: more than one-third of all vitamin E tocotrienol research of the last 30 years has been published since 2009. The thriving field of tocotrienol research gives ground for publication of Tocotrienols: Vitamin E Beyond Tocopherols, Second Edition, a compilation of the latest tocotrienol research in all new chapters.

Highlights

  • Established research, including prevention and treatment of cardiovascular disease, metabolic syndrome, and cancer
  • Emergent research, including angiogenesis, bioavailability, bone health, gastric injury, inflammation, life extension, and skin health
  • Tocopherol interference with tocotrienol functions
  • All new chapters and many new contributors

Recognized as potent antioxidants, tocotrienols play a role in cholesterol reduction, tumor suppression, reversal of arteriosclerosis, and protection of the heart against oxidative stress. Compiling contributions from leading researchers, this book overviews tocotrienols, and examines their sources, chemistry, and mechanisms of action. Contributors discuss the role of tocotrienols in the treatment and prevention of cancer and in cardiovascular health, diabetes, and other hormone regulation by tocotrienols. In addition, the book addresses animal and in vitro as well as mechanistic and pre-clinical studies.

Dr. Tan discusses the benefits of tocotrienol in a YouTube video.

Tocotrienols - Bodyguards of Health
By Alan S Tanisawa
As a former U.C. Berkeley student of Professor Herbert Evans, the co-discoverer of Vitamin E, I truly enjoyed reading both editions as it provides enlightening new detailed information about the recently discovered properties of the tocotrienols. Since Dr. Evan's discovery of alpha tocopherol over 90 yrs. ago (1922), most of the vitamin E research has been focused on this isomer, which we now know is only one of the more than eight that make up the vitamin E family. Tocotrienols were discovered much later (1965) and remained obscure until the 1980's when it was discovered that the tocotrienols lower blood cholesterol, but not the tocopherols. In 1995, research cardiologists in a four year study of patients with severe carotid stenosis reported that "94% of the patients receiving tocotrienols improved or stabilized, whereas none of the controls improved, and over half got worse". Current research now consistently reveals that alpha tocopherol actually interferes with the function of the tocotrienols and should be kept separate for maximum tocotrienol benefits. Today, research results are revealing incredible results for tocotrienols in cancer inhibition and cardiovascular disease, as well as amazing developments in other beneficial areas of anti-angiogenesis, anti-inflammation, obesity and diabetes, radiation protection, skin and bone health, anti-aging, and recently cognitive impairment. I most anxiously await the latest research discoveries of this amazing bodyguard of health! I'm sure Dr. Evans would be ecstatic to learn about the Tocotrienols, as he only knew about Tocopherols.

Useful Homebrewing Book
By G. Schmidt
This is a pretty good home brewing book. It's NOT a yeast biology textbook or a yeast-ranching manual, though, and I think the other recent review is a bit unfair in its expectations. (If you're looking for that kind of information, it's out there. Start with George Fix.) It is technical enough to get its point across without requiring me to dig out old college textbooks to understand its references.

If you're an intermediate- to advanced-homebrewer, this is worth having. (True beginners should probably concentrate on big-ticket techniques first.) It will teach you everything you need to know to get the best performance out of yeast purchased from reputable sources and help you shepherd it through a typical 4 or 5 generations.

Written for homebrewers
By A. Colombo
After reading the other reviews I was a little unsure if purchasing this book would apply to homebrewers. After reading this book extensively I believe that this is an excellent starting point for homebrewers who want to learn how to culture and store their own yeast. The other reviews are correct, there are a few basic introduction chapters in the beginning but the vast majority of the book is an extensive guide on yeast culturing practices from start to finish. The author(s) do an excellent job explaining concepts and procedures in a clear way giving the reader a step-by-step guide, with some photographs.

The authors give examples of how commercial breweries grow up their yeast to pitchable rates, but the vast majority of this book is written for homebrewers who are working in 5 and 10 gallon batches. Everything is covered in detail, from washing and rinsing yeast harvested from a primary fermentation vessel, pitching rates, yeast starters, harvesting yeast, storing yeast, preparing slants and petri dishes and streak plating yeast cells to grow and isolate different colonies. For those homebrewers who think that yeast culturing is way too much of a headache and prefer to purchase a new vial of yeast from the store for every batch, please give this book a chance and see how easy it is to culture and isolate your own yeast. The author(s) do an excellent job of describing how complex a brewery laboratory can be, but they do an even better job of teaching the homebrewer to use the exact same techniques at home using nothing more than a pressure cooker, agar, dry malt extract and a wire inoculation loop.

If you are a homebrewer who is just starting out and are using extract and partial mash recipes then perhaps yeast culturing is too large of a next step. However, for all-grain brewers who are looking to take their recipes to the next level and begin culturing their own strains and producing strains that are unique to their recipes then this book will be an excellent starting point. The author(s) teach the reader how to streak yeast onto a petri dish and isolate individual colonies as well as how to select the healthiest colonies as well as how to step up these colonies to a pitchable size for a 5 gallon fermentation.

All of the other reviews for this book are fairly accurate and each has their own degree of truth, but by all means to not let the negative reviews for this book sway your decision. It does not matter if you are a homebrewer or a full size commercial brewery, if you have considered culturing your own yeast to save money or to create new and unique yeast strains, please give this book a chance.

If you really want to understand brewing
By kamel maude
The information in this book is invaluable, whether you are just starting out as a home brewer, or have years of experience. After brewing for almost 7 years - mostly reading articles from popular brew magazines, collecting information from online forums, watching youtube videos, I would greatly urge you to pick up a copy of this book. Whether it provides too much information or not, is up to you to determine, but even if the knowledge goes on unused, I'd imagine everyone would love to have an idea of what really goes on in brewing chemistry. I would strongly recommend all the books in this series for anyone who is serious about brewing beer. The book was particularly enjoyable to me because of the mix of science (biological and chemistry) with real scenarios, while still written in a language that anyone can comprehend.

Cheers!
