"True Hallucinations" remains as much of a sentimental, "favorite book" as I have; if I do still in fact have just one. I met Terence, albeit relatively briefly, at a conference in NYC in 1996, and his eloquence and ideas absolutely changed the trajectory of my whole life. This is a work that is an edge of your seat adventure tale that unfolds within the most gorgeous prose style you can possibly imagine. The fact that it is a true life story makes it all the more moving(especially in light of his recent death: April 3, 2000)and mind blowing. I've read, and reread this a few times over the years, and it still moves me as much, as any work I have ever encountered; probably even moreso.
"Archaic Revival" is the best "one-stop" place to find an overview of many of McKenna's major ideas. The book contains interviews, essays etc. on so many different subjects that I doubt that I could recommend a better book; unless it would be "True Hallucinations". While "True Halluciantions" is a story/novel, "Archaic Revival" is a more varied piece; though equally challenging and moving in it's own ways. The fact that these are available as a "twofer" is just great. Don't miss out. Order a couple to give out as gifts ! I did.

Some day the future race of humans (should we survive) will hopefully have access to texts such as McKenna's. So few have gone so far into that 'other world' discovered (in part) through the use of psychotomimetic and psychedelic chemical compounds. Building upon and expanding immensely the "doors of perception" concept that originated with Blake and was popularized by Huxley, McKenna examines the tryptophans in particular and the true glimpses into the unknown that they can offer. If you have ever wondered about the existence of a separate plane of reality, and/or are curious about recent scientific experimentation with psychoactive hallucinogens, do not miss this amazing individual and his valuable contributions to an obscure yet vital field of knowledge.

Excellent sourcebook for readers

This book, originally loaned to me by a police professional, is an excellent resource for a variety of readers who are involved with criminal investigations but don't really have all the tools and training of a full-time medical examiner. In my case, as a crime author, the text was an invaluable reference, putting some highly technical material into easily digested context. The collection of photographs, while occasionally grisly, provides an excellent visual reference. Recommended for laymen of all kinds who need a good reference work on forensic pathology.

Good reference

If your idea of forensics is CSI on television, this book is not for you. If you are studying forensic science, or need an excellent reference book, by all means - buy it. This book gives one a strong foundation, and the photographs are an excellent source of information, of which to look at after reading the descriptions.

The second edition is a definite improvment over the first.If you are looking for a chapter on gunshot wounds, it is not here. However, DiMaio has written the standard on evaluating gunshot wounds: Gunshot Wounds: Practical Aspects of Firearms, Ballistics, and Forensic Techniques.

Wonderful Textbook Style Book

This book didn't beat around the bush at all. It took you right into the morbid details of death. Every subject I can think of regarding death was explained in this book. The pictures were mostly black and white but the detail in them was still enough to stir my stomach.
This book went from babies to burns, from rapes to stabbings, from gunshots to suffocation. It told you how things were done and why evidence was placed the way that it was.
This book was in textbook form and I believe that it is actually used for students to learn with. In saying that, you can not only learn with this book but you can also keep yourself interested with having some death questions answered.
Overall, a wonderful book for someone looking to get into the forensic field, or for someone just interested in death and how some things happen.

Better than SAO in my opinion

you wouldn't be reading this without the previous two, but this series is fun for its world building and interesting imagination of the future. What I like about this series is the main character starts off pathetic, and slowly grows into himself. This story arc is the first challenge to that sense of self-growth and it's a two-parter. If you liked the previous books, no reason not to pick this up.

Slow But Pretty Imaginative

Yet another literary masterpiece from the literary mastermind of the light novel genre. Kawahara has greatly disrupted the virtual games novel genre by introducing one of the best engines around. The Incarnate Engine using the power of the will and imagination to cause the Burst Link program to make the impossible possible was greatly brought to life the Haru's desire to overcome the new enemy in front of him. I love this system alot as it transcended the typical power leveling plot that most video game fans know. Rather it made it feel as if this is the VRMMO that anyone would want to play. From enhancing ones attack abilities to just making new means of motion and more there are endless possibilities for such a system. The chapter highlighting it was just as good as those mentioning Seiji Nomi. I cant wait to see how Haru will use this to overcome this foe in the next volume.

Beyond the content the volume was pretty well done. Characters like Takumu and Haru were developed more while new characters like Nomi and Sky Raker were given good focus. I think the volume started slow though, it took over 100 pages for it to truly get to a point in which I would say it became a page turner that made you really want to keep reading more. Thus far this seems to be the case for most of Kawahara's Accel World entries. I have yet to see if this is true in both Sword Art Online and Sword Art Online Progressive or his new work, the Isolator, so it could be his style of writing.

Quality wise, there was an afterward as our bonus content. Art looked great as usual for HIMA. And lastly, there were oddly no apparent typos in the volumes. The translator and quality checkers did a great job.

This series kept my interest---I read a lot (book daily) got the first one "free" and ultimately bought the whole series. I like the fact that you can read one and feel like you got the whole story. Then the rest just ties in.

Jealousy can make you crazy. The Lord Alpha Corrigan starts off in the complete meltdown when Mack, a Draco Wyr and the love of his life must end their relationship because of an Otherworldly Council that Mack must become head of. The Otherworldly groups are trying to stop a necromancer bent on the destruction of there world as well as the human world. Loss and love have us crying ,screaming and wanting to tear the necromancer to pieces ourselves to get our sweet Mack back to Corrigan secrets are found out rules are in the way and in the end friends will find a way to get the couple where they were always meant to be. the factions all want to keep the couple apart but fate will not be lost to them though it will take all they have and even death to get there. A must read series that you will love . I recommend the whole series of books and companion book it is a wonderful story from beginning to end .Magical Mysteries Monsters love hate fear and jealousy fill you up with wanting more and more of Mack and Corrigan

This is the final book of the series and it was amazing. The Lord Alpha Corrigan starts off in the complete meltdown when Mack, a Draco Wyr and the love of his life must end their relationship because of an Otherworldly Counsil that Mack must become head of. The Otherworldly groups are trying to stop a necromancer bent on the distruction of their as well as the human world. The Lord Alpha does his best to infuriate Mack by supposedly dating another woman, but his heart isn't into it at all. All the council members, surprising, start working together to defeat the necromancer. He is one evil and deadly being. Death and injuries mount and it seems he can't be beaten. The ending is more of Helen Harper at her best.

This book was ok. I was hoping that the part where it said styles of today was really styles of today. I could have spent my money on another book worth $40. Great for a coffee table book not for a reference for styling.

Detailed Photos

Admiring the black and white photos in Sagay's book is a delight. The hair styles are exotic and complex. She describes two different techniques, cornrowing and hair threading, with enough clarity and step by step photos that it is possible for a beginner to achieve one of the styles. There are also many outragously time-consuming examples that would challenge the most proficient hair stylist to reach new heights of difficulty. Sheer, outrageous fantasy is the only way to describe some of the hair styles, but they are still fun to see. Sagay gives a fair amount of historical background to show where and when the hairstyles originated. I was fascinated to discover that some of the hairdressing ingredients used in Africa were oil, charcoal and clay. The faces of the women and girls in the book are serene, joyful and proud. I wish that the book was updated to show current styles and that some of the photos were in color.

These hairstyles are "a blast from the past" and no matter what type of hair you have, you'll enjoy the many photos. The subject matter truly transcends ethnicities. You will learn about different cultures as you view the creative "hair art". My god-daughter wants to attend a highschool cosmetology course, so I bought this book as an inspiration. It worked! :)

Another great addition to the series

Another great addition to the series. I am giving it 4 stars, because Rosie Revere has absolutely captured my heart, but this one is also really great, thought the story doesn't quite feel as fleshed out.
A few things I love about it:
1) It seems as though Ada may possibly be autistic or have Asperger's. As the mom of a kid with autism, I really loved that Ada is a little bit different, and her parents have to adjust their parenting style and expectations to meet her needs. It's great for kids to see that sometimes parents have to make changes too.
2) I love the emphasis on a curious mind and asking lots of questions. I think a lot of times kids are discouraged from really asking lots of WHY because it annoys adults. Curiosity is what leads to great discoveries. I love Ada's innovation in creating tools to test her scientific hypotheses.
3) The style. Let's face it - these books are just oozing with style. I love that the Eames chair makes a cameo appearance here.
I hope Andrea Beaty writes lots more of these fantastic books.

Black nerd disappointed

Summary: Cute illustrations, cute character, story falls waaay short. I thought it would be my fav, but it is my least favorite of the 3.
I wanted to love it, was so excited to see it, ordered two copies to gift it, but was disappointed.
It is cute. The family adjusts to their child's wild interests. I shouldn't compare this title to the other two, but Iggy Peck gets to save his whole class from the madness of ill-fortune. Rosie's purpose is at least clearly available with the flying machine. Ada is just going around making a mess and asking interesting questions.
-she's seen as slow at the beginning given she doesn't speak for 3 years
-she is put in time out by her family as a result of her experiments
-her science at school is described as "young Ada's chaos wrecked havoc at school."

I appreciate the attempts at loving a kid with the talent and interest in STEM that each of the 3 books illustrate, but, sadly, the 3 stories are not equal.

A little twisted

I really wanted to love this book and ordered it with great anticipation. Ada wreaks havoc on her own house as her parents watch on...Ok, I was interested to see how this was going to pan out as I do not want my own children to think it is ok to do that in reality...but then I was HORRIFIED to get the part of the story where she nearly puts her pet cat in the clothes dryer. I had to nervously laugh it off when my children asked what she was doing and if the "cat was going to die because it got too hot and had no air?". Left a very bad taste in my mouth and unfortunately, won't be adding this to our book rotation.
