Help Me Say Goodbye an Excellent Aid for Grieving Children

Help Me Say Goodbye is an excellent aid for parents and others dealing with children grieving at the loss of a loved one. Over time, the exercises and discussions they engender with grieving children open up the child's understanding of their own grief and the grief process. It is good for very young children, who often have difficulty expressing some of the confusing and conflicting thoughts one has when a loved one dies. The activities in the book are respectful of feelings small children have, and encourages all attempts at expression of complicated feelings. The workbook can be used again and again as the child works his/her way through feelings found in the different phases of grief. This is another book I have sent to orphanages in Africa, and also to caretakers of children who have just lost a parent. It has proven to be helpful and comforting in all circumstances. The book has also had the perhaps unintended effect of making children more sensitive to and compassionate about an adult's grief. Excellent for families.

this really helped me with my young sons

When my husband died a few months ago, our children were only 2 and 4 years old, they were not sure what was going on but I found this book a few weeks before he passed away and I was able to start talking to them and showing them the activities in this book. His slow decent as the Cancer took over gave us the time to start before he died, but this book would be very helpful for sudden deaths as well. My four year old did one of the ideas from this book, making a memory table at the funeral and filling it with items that reminded him of his father, it was a very touching moment when people learned what the table represented. I would recommend this for sure, I even gave a copy to my son's preschool to use when other children need to learn to say goodbye to someone they love.

About DYING and death

This book deals with the PROCESS OF DYING and saying goodbye to a person who is leaving you slowly. It is a lovely book for this purpose. However, bought it for a child grieving the SUDDEN death of a sibling and it is not as suitable for this purpose. I wish it had been made more clear in the description.

Reading from VIII position

Ideal in order to expand your reading beyond the firsts frets of the guitar.
Of course I think is better to make studies based on reading in the previous frets before.
Maybe the best way to face this studies , is not repeat them many times, but trying to be accurate from the first reading and repeat very few times,increasing your concentration.

A must for the guitarist who wants to do things right!

If you are a guitarist who wants to build the fundamentals and knows how to read music (which you should know if you want to do things right), then this book is for you. On the other hand, if you are Joe Metalhead who wants to impress your friends with power chords, go somewhere else and quit reading the rest of this.

I have played guitar for 20 years. I took some private lessons years ago, which helped me to build the proper foundation. I also know how to read music. I hit the wall about a year ago and found that I hadn't really learned scales the way I should. This book and others from Berklee have fixed that. Of course, it has taken work but EFFORT = RESULTS. Much of what is out there is like the crumbs that fall from the table compared to this book and others like it from Berklee.

One caution... as a prerequisite, you should be familiar with the scale patterns as taught in Modern Method volumes 1-3. If you are not, you will have trouble finding the proper fingering for some of the pieces of music.

If you really want to know the guitar and advance, spend the $15 or so for this book. You will never regret it!

After buying "Reading Studies for Guitar" I knew that "Advanced Reading Studies for Guitar" would be a perfect companion. This second installment of reading studies covers positions 8-12. I can definitely say my playing level has been sharpened and I am now more confident about my playing abilities.

Any fool could write a better book over a long weekend

There are only three kinds of information in this book. And you don't need to buy this book to get them.
#1: facts and ideas that are blindingly obvious and basic common sense. Anyone with a pulse either knows all these things or understands them implicitly.
#2: basic outdoor and wildlife information, which is presented haphazardly and not always accurately anyway. There are many respected and credentialed authors who cover these areas superbly. Their work is usually worth paying for.
#3: bathos and banality. The observation that cities are big and it's easier to go unnoticed there than in a small town. The observation that people in non-English-speaking countries tend to speak languages other than English. A picture of a deer with the caption pointing out this is a deer.
After I got over being mad at myself for buying this book, my family and I laughed ourselves sick as we passed it around and took turns reading the silliest parts. I tip my hat to Mr. Abago for finding a clever way to make money without evidence of any special knowledge, skill, or talent. What a great country we live in!

I guess I was looking for his first book

This book looked really complete and interesting, but it is actually rather rambling with interesting bits hidden in the midst of semi-relevant anecdotes.

I later discovered this is the sequel to another book to which this merely adds detail, perhaps it would be better after I had read that one.

Advanced Fugitive

This is a book you have to read slowly. If you don't, then you will think it is all about how to be a homeless street walker. There are many good points in the book, but you have to be looking close to find them. The author is obviously intelligent and experienced, but not a writer.

Nice selection of topics, and level of exposition, but mistakes...

This book has a really nice, diversified selection of topics, and is quite readable. However, out of the three parts I looked at carefully, it is clear that one (the example on Global Positioning System) has a mathematical mistake (equations 3.13a,b,c), when solving a set of equations simultaneously in which all reference to y and z squared terms was lost on the right side of the equation. I think the book does well in explaining the big ideas, but one had better check all the details of the calculations before accepting them.

The Best New War Graphic Novel

I purchased "The 'Nam" Volume 1 by Marvel for two reasons. The first is that I am a Vietnam Combat Veteran and was interested on how the subject would be presented; the second is because I enjoy graphic novels, and they bring back memories of reading comic books when I was younger.

The graphic novel follows the life of Ed Marks as he enters the U.S. Army in 1966 and goes through training and is sent to Vietnam. In Vietnam Pfc. Marks is assigned to the 4/23 Infantry, Mechanized. This is an actual unit that served with distinction in Vietnam with the 25 Infantry Division (Tropic Lightning) from 1966 until it left Vietnam in 1971. I served with the 4th Infantry Division, 2/8 Infantry Mechanized, Company A, 1st Squad from Oct 1968 till Jan 1970.

For those interested 4/23 Infantry means 4th Battalion (Mechanized) 23rd Infantry Regiment.
Mechanized Infantry had the ability to close in on the enemy faster and with greater fire power. Cav (Calvary) units also had this mobility with Huey's and gunships. Once contact was made the infantry always dismounted, the APC's (Armored Personal Carriers) were death traps.
Mechanized infantry also walked a lot, and at times were sent in by chopper for an air assault.

Considering the limitations placed on the publication of "The'Nam" by the Comic Code as expressed in the introduction by the editor, Larry Hama, I feel the people at Marvel have done a good job of trying to bring the Vietnam War to the attention of a readership that in all likelihood was not born during those years.

There are exceptions I take to parts of stories included in this first volume, but there are also some very realistic points made. For instance; no one ever built a fire at night while out on patrol (it would give your position away) and few companies went back to base camps, we stayed in the bush for months. Also to my knowledge no one flew into Vietnam as replacements under a hail of gunfire as depicted early in the issue. The exceptions to that are the Marines who flew into Khe Sanh between January and April in 1968 when it was under siege. These are minor issues, after all this is a graphic novel.

However, the author Doug Murray has done a good job tying in the different scenario of combat in Vietnam. The illustrators Mike Golden and Wayne Vansant have done excellent work in their representations of the military equipment and scenery considering again the restraints placed on them in adhering to the Comic Code.

No one will ever know the true horrors of war by reading a graphic novel or any novel of war. All the same, I recommend this graphic novel for those who would like to know a little of that forgotten war and at the same time enjoy a terrific read with great graphics. I look forward to reading Volume 2.

The best way to introduce kids to the Vietnam War

"The 'Nam" is simply one of the best pop-culture depictions of our troops' experience in Vietnam that there is. And easily the best for teaching young people about it.

Written by a Vietnam vet and edited by another, each issue is a stand-alone story set in the early days of American involvement there. The dialogue can be a bit "comic booky" for me but hey, that's the medium. This is as real the war is likely to get in the pages of a comic book.

This volume includes the first 10 issues, and that's really my only complaint: It should be collected in 12-issue clumps. Each story took place one month apart, showing the war in real time as the issues came out. And because a tour in Vietnam was 12 months, we see one character rotate in for Issue 1 and head "back to the block" come Issue 12.

In summary, "The 'Nam" is a PG-appropriate version of the film "Hamburger Hill," and one that covered more ground as it wasn't limited by moving-picture runtime.

Really enjoyed these when I was a kid.

Entertaining - but not what I really expected. Also - the color was off and I can't find the volume covering the last years of the war. For people who want to learn about what Nam was really like - this will contribute to your overall understanding of the conflict (for example: the realities of communist terrorism in South Vietnam - a subject western media all but ignored because it occurred in the hinterlands - where cold beer and flush toilets weren't available - very few reporters bothered to go). I thought some of the back stories (kit carson scouts for example) were excellent and I really enjoyed the characters. I just want to see someone put together the last volume.
