The text is designed to enable those concerned with either vine or fruit problems to arrive at considered diagnoses. The student will find the text and the cited references a comprehensive source of information.

The grape and allied industries should welcome the updating of the major portion of the book. Here the emphasis is on modern practices in vineyard management in arid and semi-arid regions—with special reference to California. Full and detailed treatment is provided or propagation, supports, training young vines, pruning, cultivation and chemical weed control, irrigation, soil management, diseases and pests, and harvesting, packing and storage.

The practices recommended in the book are based on the extensive research conducted in California and elsewhere by the authors and their distinguished colleagues. Examples of practices based on experiments are: methods of propagation which by-pass the usual one-year-in-the-vine-nursery; pruning as related to leaf area and time of leaf functioning, and its effect on berry set and fruit development; virus disease control through thermotherapy and soil fumigation; pests held in check by sanitary, chemical, and biological procedures; irrigation practices as related to soil texture. Tissue analyses are employed as guidelines indicating the mineral deficiencies or excesses of vines. Machine harvesting of raisins (with cane cutting) and some wine grape varieties with problems are described.

The regional recommendations for table and raisin varieties are based on log years of observations, while those for wine grapes are the results of studies of the interrelation of variety and the heat summation of the different climatic areas.

A standard reference but. . .

I have no regrets buying General Viticulture. It is, after all, a standard reference. But in many ways it is now a lttle outdated and modern experience and advice is lacking. It should therefore be considered a important part, but only a part, of the basic library of anyone doing or contemplating viticulture.
The academic style of writing does not lend itself to the "do-it-yourself" approach. The section on laying out a vineyard, for example, is more academic than practical, at least in my opinion. A more modern book would, of course, have better photographs and graphics, and this is what I miss most.

An indepth approach to Viticulture, but getting outdated.

I got the book "General Viticulture" originally back in 1977. I've looked at it recently at some better book stores. It is a powerhouse of information, there is no doubt, but unfortunately, it has not been updated in some time. Another drawback to the book is it's lack of grape culture outside the "California" scene. There are some new strides in viticulture going on in the midwest, and north east that are not even remotely covererd. The training systems and specifics of the NEWER American hybrids, with works from Elmer Swenson, David MacGregor, Dr. Tony Bell, Dr. Peter Hemstad of the University of Minnesota, to name a few is not even mentioned. I rated it 4 stars for it's excellent overview of just about every Vinifera, it's characteristic and management, especially related to California and similar climates around the world. It is still a great refernece book, just needs to be revised sometime.

Excellent general overview of viticulture

Although this book could use an update, it is an
excellent general reference on U.S. grape growing
practices and common problems, written by experts in the field. It is a well written technical book with many black and white photos and a good bibliography. I found the style very readable and not too difficult for a novice to follow, though some sections (e.g. the section about diseases) needed a little extra time. A must for anyone seriously thinking of putting in a vinyard.

Fantastic Large Selection of Christmas Designs

[[VIDEOID:dd7094901955fefdf483c532ea53785f]]This is my first coloring book by Penny Farthing Graphics. They are published via CreateSpace which is generally used for self-publishing. The designs are drawn by a variety of artists from all over the world and are licensed via Shutterstock.com. What we end up with is a great coloring book (although on thin paper) with a large and varied selection of designs.

There are 60 coloring images in this book. I'm happy with the variety and the way the designs are printed on the page. Every one of them is complete rather than running off the page. If a design is stopped, it is stopped with a frame which gives me a defined end to the item I am coloring even if it is not “complete” within the picture (e.g., half of a stocking, ornament, wreath, etc.) The editors of the book have done a great job with their selection, including all the symbols I think of for Christmas, such as: Christmas Trees, Santa, ornaments, stocking, nutcrackers, fireplaces, snowman, candles and much more.

The pages are printed on thin white paper which is not perforated. The designs are printed on one side of the page with the back left blank. The designs stop well short of the binding and can easily be removed with a pen knife if you so choose.

My gel pens and markers all leaked through this paper. Not a problem, though, as I can put a piece of chipboard or a couple of heavy weight pieces of paper under the page I am working on to keep the ink from leaking through.

I am really looking forward to coloring in this book. I'm also really pleased that CreateSpace is offering an avenue for artists (or groups of artists) to self-publish their designs. It gives us, as colorists, a much greater choice.

This is the Book I am using for my Christmas coloring party! Filled with 60 Christmas illustrations & printed one per page.

This book is not for every colorist, but if you love coloring a variety of illustrations in a variety of art styles this book might be just the one you are looking for. You will find many intricately detailed patterns filled with the best loved Christmas symbols, adorned Christmas trees, a whimsical snowman who is simply detailed but charming, add in Toy Soldiers standing in a row, Stockings hung with care on the mantel, Gifts wrapped in colorful paper and adorned with festive bows, Snowflakes, Candy Canes , and so many more in this huge book with its 60 pages of Christmas just waiting for you to add color and your own personal art style to bring them to life.

The cover picture is included in the book and is representative of many of the other images.

This is the book I am using for my Christmas coloring party this year; I know everyone will find a picture they love. There is only one illustration in this book I do not care for. WOW that is out of 60 illustrations.

1. 60 illustrations printed one per page (the back of each page is blank) on medium weight bright white paper

2. All my markers bleed through the pages, I just place a sheet of paper under the page I am coloring to prevent damage to the next picture if I am using markers.

3. Most of the images include many small details, with a few less detailed for variety so Ultra Fine Markers, and Colored pencils are my coloring medium of choice for this book.

4. All images are centered on each page and end ¼ inch to ½ inch from all the edges including the edge with the binding.

a. This leaves enough room to easily color each illustration in its entirety.

b. This leaves enough room to remove the pages with a box knife, my preferred method; I use a ruler, a box knife and place a piece of cardboard under the page to prevent cutting the next page.

c. This is enough room to take this book to an office supply store and have them cut the binding off, to release all the pages from the book. This gives you individual pages for your coloring party, coloring club, plus a wonderful choice to donate the images to seniors in assisted living housing, and perfect for students.

5. The author’s have spent days searching the works of many artists with care, chosen the best and brought them to you in this wonderful collection of Christmas illustrations. The images have been purchased under license from Shutterstock.com. This means that when you purchase this book you are supporting not one but many individual artists, from all over the world who post their images for purchase on the web and do not publish their own coloring books.

Excellent text on statistical biomedical signal analysis

I am using this book as a primary textbook in a Biomedical Engineering undergraduate course on Biomedical signal analysis. The students in this class come with a fairly good background in linear systems, stochastic processes and physiology, and the purpose of the course is to integrate this knowledge, and actually apply it to real-world statistical biomedical signals. Previous iterations of the course relied on a general statistical signals book (Bendat & Piersol), together with physiological examples provided by the instructor, since physiological signals books were too shallow. The current book, however, elegantly integrates the statistical signal analysis topics with the relevant biomedical applications, and it became an obvious choice. Moreover, unlike general engineering textbooks, this book doesn't shy away from methods for treating nonstationary signals (segmentation, time-frequency analysis, wavelets, detection...), as these are so fundamental in characterizing biomedical signals. Such topics are typically treated in a multitude of specialized books, and are therefore difficult to integrate coherently into a short course.

To improve: since the book's focus is on EEG and ECG, it could be great if the authors added a chapter on source localization/inverse problems, which arise in both systems. Although this is a huge topic in its own, one could do some basic justice to this important topic in a limited space as well, and thereby introduce students to ill-posed problems and their regularization. I was also slightly dissapointed that there is very little on error bounds in compound estimates (correlation and spectral density functions).

A Fine Sampler

Another gem of the Oxford World's Classics series, Crossley-Holland's anthology presents a generous selection of poetry and prose covering the major genres of Anglo Saxon Lit. All the famous stuff is here -- Seafarer, Wanderer, Battle of Maldon,etc -- including a very fine Beowulf translation that's highly readable without straying far from the literal meaning of the original. Plus riddles, laws, sections of the Chronicle -- quite enough to get a rounded picture of this fascinating literature, and all well translated. The scholarly notes are sparse but adequate for an intro-level text. If I could make one suggestion for improvement, it would be to add the Anglo-Saxon versions in a bilingual edition, so readers could have the sound and structure of the originals.

beautiful renderings of the elegies

I bought this book in an old edition paperback form in Dublin because it contained the major elegies such as the Wanderer and the Seafarer. I ended up being extremely satisifed not only with the beautiful translation of the Wanderer, but with all of the selections and with Crossley-Holland's comments. I was very thrilled to meet him recently at a reading in Seattle, where he was promoting his Arthur trilogy. I'll have to check that out.

Fascinating Reading

I'm a homeschooled student (in 10th grade). I read this book as part of a course on early European history, and have also referred to it while studying the history of the English language. Most of the translations are very accessible to the modern reader on their own, and Mr. Crossley-Holland's insightful commentary clears up those which are more difficult or obscure. Anyone who has a serious interest in the literature and culture of the Anglo-Saxons will not be disappointed in this book.

Joseph Straus is Distinguished Professor of Music at the Graduate Center of the City University of New York.  He taught for many years at the University of Wisconsin-Madison and Queens College (CUNY).  The author or editor of twelve books and numerous articles, mostly on topics in twentieth-century music, he is a former President of the Society for Music Theory.

Arguably the best textbook for the course it's designed for.

Elements of Music by Joseph Straus is arguably the best textbook currently available for the course it is designed for (i.e. Music Fundamentals for music majors as a pre-theory review course, as well as for non-music majors). It covers topics in a comprehensive progressive manner - pitch recognition, rhythm and meter, scales, intervals, triads and 7th chords, introduction to 4-part harmony and music organizations - and at the same time leaves the instructor and students a great degree of flexibility. The 2nd edition varies little from the 1st, but the improvements are noticeable and welcomed: larger font sizes, rearranged music examples in certain exercises (in accordance with the level of difficulty), and the addition of a self test at the end of each chapter.

Good music book, but price is not music to my ears.

This book is exactly what it claims to be... an entry level music theory book.
It takes you through the essentials needed for understanding the fundamentals
of music. The book teaches concepts such as notes, melodies, chords, and scales
through the layout of a piano (which I think is a good idea). The book also teaches
concepts of rhythm, time and chord signatures by providing the student with an
abundance of exercises to make sure the concepts sink in.

Weaknesses:
Overpriced. There is no way this book should cost $100+ bucks because it doesn't
teach anything that can't be discovered by entering "Music Theory" into a search
engine.

Any book that crosses the $100 threshold better be hard cover, include an
CD, and not have any perforated pages.

Another weakness of this book is that it assumes that you will be in an actual class
when you are using it. The book contains tons of exercise pages that require teacher
participation to complete them. It also has group exercises.

Small print text and cramp space to complete written exercises.

Reads like a math book.

Strengths:
Good subject material.
Chapters are short.

Ludwig Bemelmans introduces little Madeline to the world

I have had several occasions to read "Madeline" over the years, yet had never read anything about her. So learning that she had celebrated her 60th birthday was something of a surprise because I did not think of this first story of that irrepressible little girl as something that was first published on the eve of World War II. But the bigger surprise was learning that "Madeline" was not originally written and published in France, which I had always assumed was the case. That means all of those times I was reading this book and wondering what it would read like in the orignal French, I was completely off the mark. Live and learn.

Ludwig Bemelmans was actually born in 1898 in that part of the Tyrol which is now known as Merano, Italy, and came to the United States in 1914. A painter and illustrator, Bemelmans contributed covers to "The New Yorker," and also started writing fiction. His first children's book, "Hansi," was published in 1934. A world traveler and true cosmopolite, Bemelmans wrote and illustrated "Madeline" in 1939 but had trouble finding a publisher because most editors felt that despite its humorous verse and simple artwork the book was too sophisticated for children (Soon & Schuster originally published the book, although the rest of the series would be published by Viking, Bemelmans usual publisher). Bemelmans named his most popular creation for his wife, Madeleine Freund, whom he had married in 1935. They had a daughter named Barbara, who would provide inspiration for some of the Madeline books.

Thinking that this book was originally written and published in France is a reasonable conclusion given all of the Paris scenes Bemelmans pictures in his book. You have the Eiffel Tower on the cover and in one of the illustrations, the lady feeding the horse is in front of the Paris Opera House, the gendarme chases the jewel thief across the Place Vendome, the wounded soldier is at the Hotel des Invalides, the children visit Notre Dame in the rain and the Gardens at the Luxembourg on the sunny day, they sake in front of the Church of the Sacre Coeur, and the man feeding the birds is in the Tuileries Gardens which face the Louvre. These settings comprise part of the book's enduring charm. I always remember the yellow pages that represent "the old house in Paris that was covered with vines," especially since yellow is also the color of the hats, coats, and often the dresses that the "twelve little girls in two straight lines" wear. Yellow is also the color of Madeline's hair in this one, although that will change in future books. But Bemelmans also takes full advantage of the complete palette when he does the scenes that happen out and about Paris (and children like him because he colors outside the lines, just like they do).

Still, in the end the prime attraction is Madeline, who is the smallest one of the twelve girls. But Madeline "was not afraid of mice," just said "Pooh-pooh" to the tiger in the zoo, and knew how to frighten Miss Clavel more than anybody else. Madeline is smart, says what she thinks, and is she is a bit disobedient that is just another reason to love her. After all, she is part of a literary family of similar young girls that go back to Anne Shirley in the "Anne of Green Gables" books and Jo March in "Little Women" (Age them and I suppose you end up with Scarlett O'Hara). Perhaps not all little girls would be as brave as Madeline when they are rushed out to the hospital in the middle of the night for an emergency appendectomy, but I suspect most young girls would like to think that they would be as brave and that they would show off the scar on their stomach with as much élan as Madeline.

The classic start of the Madeline series

A short children's story about a young girl who lives with eleven other girls in a home in Paris and who has to go to the hospital to have her appendix removed. It was a 1940 Caldecott Honor book (i.e., a runner-up to the Medal winner) for best illustration in a book for children. This book, and others in the Madeline series, have become classics in children literature and every serious student of children literature should have it on their shelves. Children love these books.

Essential!

As a child, some of my favorite books were the Madeline stories. This is the first in the series, and it sets a wonderful tone. The illustrations are wonderful, and it's fun to see illustrations of actual Parisian landmarks such as the Opera, Eiffel Tower, Notre Dame and Tulleries. The story is fun, fast and catchy, and I used to wish that I was one of the little girls standing amongst the two straight lines lead by Miss Clavel.
This book is not just for little girls. Boys can enjoy the story as well.
