His story includes shipwrecks, natural disasters, desperate escapes, glorious failures, but always the assumption that any person’s life is an unscripted adventure demanding unquestionable expertise. Combining mechanics and vision, Melbourne Smith shattered the amnesia of progress and reawakened the world to the great history of towering masts, fast hulls, shining sprawls of canvas, and extreme risk on the high seas.

I have always had an interest in sailing, especially in the era of the clipper ships, and have read a great many nautical themed books. However, biographies have not always been my first choice but once into the first chapter I was hooked. I felt like I was reading a mystery and could not put it down. It is such an American story, of dreams and the courage to pursue those dreams. Melbourne Smith is a rare individual, and we are shown how he grew up to be a dedicated expert at preserving history by designing, building, and actually sailing those ships of a bygone era, an era that saw the birth of America. The fact is, Melbourne Smith's story is much more than a biography, it is a fact filled book, a reference, about the grand sailing ships of old. Practical, but not superficial

Clearly, Excel is not even remotely the best platform to perform large scale credit risk modeling or analysis. However, Excel is probably the most concise, neutral platform from which to demonstrate the techniques involved in implementing the models discussed in the book.

** Note, please do not rely on this book as your main source for learning the mathematical and economical nuances of these models.

Standard ASCE/SEI 7 is an integral part of building codes in the United States. Many of the load provisions are substantially adopted by reference in the International Building Code and the NFPA 5000 Building Construction and Safety Code. This is a grat book! Must have for anyone into sustainable design or rural design and construction.

This is the English version of the original Spanish only book. The Barefoot Architect is a single volume book that covers every aspect of how to plan and construct rural central American (and South American) towns. From town planning, where to site buildings, how to build a house, or public toilets, a water powered wheel, or build a wheel barrow out of a 55 gallon drum, this book has it all. I'd bought the Spanish version years ago in a small bookstore in Mexico and was REALLY HAPPY to find it in English (as my Spanish isn't at all good). Dimensions all remain in metric, which is fine.

A great gift for anyone into these topics!

I've not been so excited since the first " Whole Earth Catalog"! Put this in your luggage and find spot on the globe and go build a village.

well the book arrived in a couple days. its mostly pictures very thick and arrived with out damage. this book was written in 1982 in mexico and later translated. it's very interesting but if you plan to build within the building codes in the US or any where that has building codes this book is not going to get you too far with your inspector. on the other hand it should be in every library and in every ecovillage. Survivalists and preppers, i would highly recommend this book to you.

Dated, but Highly Informative

This is a great book about the history of the diamond trade and the state that it was in back in the early late 70s and Early 80s. However, that was 30 years ago, and Epstein hasn't done a great job of keep up with the industry.

I bought this book on the strength of it's mention on the first TrueTV episode of Adams Ruins Everything, where had Epstein featured on it. And I don't regret the purchase at all. Epstein takes an in-depth look at several De Beers diamond mines, the distribution of the diamond in London, and the ways De Beers held onto it's diamond monopoly. It's great look at how controlling supply and demand from the top down is essential to maintaining high prices. It also takes a look at 20th Century ad campaigns that helped make the diamond industry what it is.

It's only problem is that the book was written in the early 80s and makes it sound like the diamond industry is still like this, and it's not. Rather, it shows the beginning of what the diamond industry is today. It talks about antitrust litigation by the DOJ, but the resolution (with De Beers settling the lawsuit) doesn't happen until years after the book with published. The book also discusses competition by the Soviets, completion that only increased in the years since publication.

And that's the thing, De Beers had a monopoly back when the book was published. It doesn't now. The diamond monopoly has been replaced with a cartel, and while the goals of a cartel are the same as a monopoly, the means are very different. For example, the idea of "blood diamonds" comes from the cartel trying to keep people from buying diamonds from native mining operations and channel all sales through the cartel. So, while the book is very informative, you won't come away from an accurate picture of what the diamond industry is like right now.

Diamonds are not a girls best friend.

My fiancee hates this book.
It tells the story of the propaganda of the diamond industry and how there is no shortage of diamonds. The worst part?
Your diamonds are worth nothing after purchase.
Don't believe me?
Do as the book suggests. Make a trip to a few jewelry stores under the pretense(Act Serious)of selling your diamonds and see how little,if any,money you are offered.

If you get any where near purchase price(85to90%)write a reply to this review and tell me where the jewelry store is.

DeBeers' Unveiling

This book knocks the legs out of the diamond industry. What appears elegant and elite turns out to be a down and dirty industry, selling tainted, overpriced products. And they've maintained a monopoly during generations of anti-trust measures!
This book is very readable and very entertaining. I wrote a report on the subject for a MBA class which got great reviews. I'm inclined to think it was as much for the shocking truths which were revealed as much as my superior writing skills! I'd recommend this book to anyone who has ever considered purchasing a diamond.

Turn Around Leadership Principles...(Not Formulae)...Uniquely Individualized for Each of Us

At last! I am so pleased that Drs. Brown, Penfold & Westra have brought us pastors a process unique to each of us Pastor Unique: Becoming a Turnaround Leader...not another generalized program for everybody to implement in the same way.

I was encouraged by the way these authors offer us individual leadership components identified through the highly acclaimed "Birkman Method(TM)" personality inventory. I am learning much from my own individual results as the authors teach how I personally share some (and not other) "TurnAround Pastor" (TAP) common traits. They show me the researched and scientifically verified "best practices" common to effective TAPs, then offer to coach me (and you) in those "best practices" I was very interested to learn the leadership style of those who have "successfully" led a plateaued or dying church into Christ-centered, mission focused, outreach oriented beacons of light in their communities, then learn that I can be coached to lead in a similar way.

Besides learning about myself, I have been blessed to help pastors in our Conference discover their God-given uniqueness for nearly a year. Soon we will participate in the signature "TAP Boot Camp" training (recommended in this book) learning how to apply these principles in our own individual ways. True to the process these authors present, our pastors and "their" layperson leaders who are committed to applying these identified "best practices" will take their own unique plan back home to implement in their local plateaued and/or dying churches.

None of this could be accomplished in such a unique way without the work of these authors as explained in their book. I believe with all my heart that these Biblically-sound authors have arrived on scene, now, to be used by God before so many of our American churches completely fade away and die in the next few years.

I highly recommend you, pastor or layperson, desperately seeking to bring life to your congregation, read and apply this important guide before it's too late for your congregation.

Highly recommend - structured, creative design.

We just purchased this. I talked to my 9 year old son about different ways to use the book - rounding the the edges on the printed design pages to change the drawings, counting the pixels and duplicating the pictures on the plain backs of pages (just gridded area) to learn how to duplicate the designs and their structure, and adding on to the design pages to change the pictures. Then we noticed the loose soft rubber squares and realized that he could put the paper on the board and push the pieces on top.
The first thing he did though was to open the book to a blank grid page and freehand a small design to get a feel and then designed his own pixel art piece, which was a monster with a sidekick (total time about 25 minutes). He loves it and does not want to put it down, I love the square design board and the soft rubber pieces, it really captures his imagination and an urge to create in a very structured fashion.
Highly recommend!

Our kids love minecraft. They got this at a Christmas gift exchange. They've enjoyed it and enjoy racing each other for who can build each pixel art page faster. Little rubber square nubs (that could be easily swallowed by little ones or lost so be aware), get pressed into the front cover that has hard plastic square pegs (sort of like a Lego grass). It's sort of like modern lightbright without the light.

The only complaint is that the pieces fall off a little easily and that you have to keep turning the page ...

My seven year old loves this book. We use it for quiet time during church. The only complaint is that the pieces fall off a little easily and that you have to keep turning the page back and forth to see the picture you are trying to make. But I figured both these things when I bought it so I would still buy it all over again. Very fun and creative!
