Martin Evening is a UK-based photographer and noted expert in photography and digital imaging. In addition to being a best-selling author, Evening is a sought-after speaker and lecturer and is a member of the NAPP Photoshop Hall of Fame. He also works with the Adobe Photoshop and Adobe Photoshop Lightroom engineering teams, consulting on new feature development and alpha and beta testing. An Essential Reference

Even though Lightroom is one of the more friendly pieces of image processing software around, there are still times when a user can't remember how to do something, or guesses that there might be a better way to do it, or really wants to delve deeper into one of its functions. That is where Martin Evening comes in.

This book provides a comprehensive look at Lightroom's functions. It's more like an encyclopedia than an instruction manual. Oh, there are chapters available that follow right along with the Lightroom workflow process from intake to output. It is possible to introduce one's self to Lightroom with this book. But unlike, say, Scott Kelby's The Adobe Photoshop Lightroom CC Book for Digital Photographers (Voices That Matter), there are no tutorials as such. Instead the entries read more like an encyclopedia, although arranged by workflow rather than alphabet. One really needs to know a little bit about how Lightroom works before this book proves most useful. If you don't you may not even know what to look up.

This book comes into its own once you start using the software. There is even an appendix that includes a section on hacking Lightroom. (Don't do it; as Evening explains there are easier, less dangerous ways to customize the software.) The author often illustrates his points with images showing the starting point and the effect of an adjustment that was made.

An example of Evening's going a step beyond is his discussion of camera calibration. He not only explains what Lightroom camera calibration is, but even tells you how to create a custom calibration. (Even though I've tried the process, I'm quite happy with the Adobe Standard Calibration, but if exact color matching is important to you, this could prove useful.)

I've kept a copy of prior versions next to my computer and referred to it whenever I had a question. Evening hasn't failed me yet. I expect to do so with the current volume. If I were beginning Lightroom, I wouldn't try to learn from this book, but as a regular user of Lightroom, I wouldn't be without it.

Simply the best

I own many Photoshop and Lightroom how to books, and Martin Evening pens by far the most comprehensive and well organized of them all. Evening is the only writer I know of that would get full price out of me. No silly jokes every paragraph, no back tracking, just enough illustration and simply spot on guidance. Its a lot of reading if that's the way you learn. I go into the program (Lightroom CC in this example) and use the index to cover my questions, and it works well for me. There are free resources online, but the depth of Mr Evening's knowledge is worth what you will spend on this book. Newbies and seasoned pros can get a lot from this. If learning Lightroom CC quickly and to the max is important, get this book!

A Beautiful and Comprehensive Volume for All Lightroom Users

I received Martin Evening's book in hopes to improve my abilities with Lightroom CC/6. I have been a LR user since LR3, and thought I had explored most of the program quite sufficiently for my needs. I didn't realize how much of the program I'd missed, including shortcuts, time-saving processes, and editing techniques that would have vastly improved my skills and my photo outputs, had I made use of a book like this one.

I am very impressed by the high-quality of this volume. Each page features elegant layout, color photographs, and in-depth examples and illustrations. It is a pure joy to reach anywhere in this book, to any page, and discover something new about the program that I use every day. The examples and techniques also give me fresh inspiration to reconsider edits I've done in the past. Not only do I want to revisit aspects of my photography, but I also now want to explore some of my ideas all over again. In short, I am inspired and excited to use this book as my companion for photography.

From start to finish, this book covers all possible types of photography, library organization, mobile features, and all output modules. It also goes very in-depth with all aspects of the develop module, including detailing many techniques for color and black and white editing. It provides comprehensive examples for all types and styles of editing, and RAW file format concepts (including camera calibration and RAW color editing).

Whether you are a beginner or experienced Lightroom user, amateur or professional, Martin Evening's book will offer techniques, ideas, and training to elevate your skills. I am convinced that no matter at what level your photography may be, this book will improve your style. It will improve your abilities in the entire gamut of photography, from choosing the right settings in your camera and creating a composition based on your vision, to organizing and editing your photos. Rapid Application Development Methodology

I have not read all of James Martin's book, but I have researched the topic, and the book talks about the Rapid Application Development software development methodology of which James Martin was the primary author. The methodology was developed by Dr. Martin in the late 1980's as a response to the non-agile methodologies of the 1970's such as the waterfall methodology. The primary problem of the previous methodologies was that larger applications took so long to build that requirements would change before the system was complete, resulting in unusable systems. Rapid Application Development (RAD) attempts to solve the problem through prototyping, iterative development, time boxing, small teams, an active management approach, and the use of Computer Aided Software Engineering (CASE) tools. The RAD methodology is not as popular today as agile methodologies such as eXtreme Programming (XP), but it is still a valuable methodology in the right circumstances. Beginning in 1881 and continuing to 1906, Ambrose Bierce created a series of sardonic word definitions of his own. Many of these were collected and published as The Cynic's Word Book, which he later protested was "a name which the author had not the power to reject or happiness to approve." So in 1911, he pulled together a collection that was more to his own liking and called it The Devil's Dictionary. The entries are a tad uneven in quality, but most are amusing and some are great. Each reader will have his own favorites, some of mine are as follows : ACQUAINTANCE, n. A person whom we know well enough to borrow from, but not well enough to lend to. A degree of friendship called slight when its object is poor or obscure, and intimate when he is rich or famous. ALLIANCE, n. In international politics, the union of two thieves who have their hands so deeply inserted in each other's pockets that they cannot separately plunder a third. BIGOT, n. One who is obstinately and zealously attached to an opinion that you do not entertain. BORE, n. A person who talks when you wish him to listen. CONSULT, v.i. To seek another's disapproval of a course already decided on. CYNIC, n. A blackguard whose faulty vision sees things as they are, not as they ought to be. Hence the custom among the Scythians of plucking out a cynic's eyes to improve his vision. DICTIONARY, n. A malevolent literary device for cramping the growth of a language and making it hard and inelastic. This dictionary, however, is a most useful work. DISCRIMINATE, v.i. I'd skip this and purchase the UNABRIDGED version. Some of the definitions left out in this version are among Bierce's best. Also, the complete work is not so long: no reason to abridge something that in full length is only 100 or so pages long.

The book gives an overview of the biological principles applicable to the Animal Sciences, with chapters on reproduction, genetics, nutrition, lactation, consumer products, and other subjects. The book also covers the breeding, feeding, and management of beef cattle, dairy cattle, horses, sheep, swine, poultry, goats, and aquaculture. Although books have been written on each of these separate subjects, the authors have highlighted the significant biological principles, scientific relationships, and management practices in a condensed but informative manner. TARGET AUDIENCE

This book is designed as a text for the introductory Animal Science course typically taught at universities and junior or community colleges. It is also a valuable reference book for livestock producers, vocational agriculture instructors, and others desiring an overview of livestock production principles and management. The book is basic and sufficiently simple for urban students with limited livestock experience, yet challenging for students who have a livestock production background. KEY FEATURES

About the Author

Robert E. Taylor was raised on an Idaho livestock operation where several livestock species were produced. He received a B.S. degree in animal husbandry and a Master's degree in animal production from Utah State University. This background, combined with his Ph.D. work in animal breeding and physiology from Oklahoma State University, provided much depth to his knowledge of livestock production. He has had practical production experience with beef cattle, dairy cattle, horses, poultry, sheep, and swine.

 

Dr. Taylor received teaching awards at Iowa State University (where he also managed a swine herd) and at Colorado State University. He also received the Distinguished Teaching Award from the American Society of Animal Science in recognition of his ability to organize and present materials to students. Many of his concepts for effective teaching are used in this book. Dr. Taylor passed away in 1998.

 

Thomas G. Field was raised on a Colorado cow-calf and seedstock enterprise. He managed a seedstock herd of cattle after completing his B.S. degree. A competitive horseman as a youth, he has had practical experience with seedstock cattle, commercial cow-calf production, stockers, and horses. He has a B.S., M.S., and Ph.D. in animal science from Colorado State University.

 

Dr. Field has received teaching awards from the USDA National Excellence in Teaching program, the National Association of Colleges and Teachers of Agriculture, the American Society of Animal Sciences, and Colorado State University. Dr. Field is the teaching coordinator for the Department of Animal Sciences at Colorado State University and is responsible for coordinating the teaching herd.

This book is required for my college class on the subject of farm animal production. It is written well enough, but I find it quite biased in favor of factory farm animal production, treating organic food production and small farms as quaint, expensive, and inefficient while lightly touching on the problems associated with CAFOs.

Propaganda at it's finest

True this book has some very basic agricultural knowledge, including chapters on things like eggs, wool, beef, poultry etc - but there are lines in the book that literally churned my stomach. The beef and poultry industries may as well have written this book themselves. My favorite that I came across so far was in the Dairy chapter where it informs you that lactose intolerance can be overcome by consuming more dairy. I'm sorry - but I continued to consume dairy for over 10 years while they tried to figure out what my "mystery illness" was and it ended up being a food allergy to dairy. Being a biology major I love how so much of what is said in this book as random comments seems to NOT be based in scientific fact. I mean sure the diagram of the egg is great, but when there are comments about people overblowing health issues of these foods it leaves me questioning the validity of the rest of the book. If you're already drinking the kool-aid of the various industries then you will be fine with this book - but if you have taken classes like Microbiology or Immunology then you'll be left scratching your head as you try to reconcile the information contained within.

Sexy, entertaining, fun

There was a time when ships were the only form of transportation between the old world in Europe and the new colonies across the waves. In those days, the oceans were full of bold pirates, waiting to seize large war-ships and merchant vessels and rob them of the riches they carried. There was not a port or tavern where the sailors did not recount the tales of the notorious Captain Black Wade, the terror of the seven seas...

So begins Black Wade: The Wild Side of Love, a beautifully illustrated and surprisingly engaging book from Bruno Gmunder by Italian duo Franze and Andarle. Officially a "gay adult comic," to simply call it that does it a major injustice; this book is visually stunning, with a story that not only flows, but flows well- and somehow allows you to escape almost immediately into the story. Black Wade brilliantly combines rich graphics with a captivating tale- of pirates!

Of course the story is simple, as it should be. It's also superbly crafted, however, by someone with an excellent grasp of language, expressing much in so few words. Of course, most people won't be focusing on the words- and who can blame them when the images are this hot? Between the dark, mysterious and slightly hirsute Captain Black Wade, the young, strong, smooth blonde Lieutenant Wilkins, and the men of both the pirate ship and the British fleet, there's enough eye candy - and resulting sexual encounters - for a short series, yet somehow it's never gratuitous.

And while the story may be somewhat predictable and borrow from old legends - and stereotypes - it's also enthralling and highly erotic... with a surprising ability to arouse. The warmth and detail of the illustrations brings the images to life; you'll likely find yourself rooting for the captured young Lieutenant even as you're secretly eager for Captain Black Wade to take advantage of him. With kidnapping, pillaging, pirate attacks, and plenty of lustful encounters, this is a passionate, wild story... with a happy ending.

Black Wade deserves a spot in your bookshelf, where you can pull it out on a quiet Sunday afternoon and escape into a quick fantasy. You may want to make sure you're alone though...

Expensive, but so worth it!

This book popped up under one of Amazon's "recommended also" features. I hesitated to buy it since it seemed a little expensive. However, I found that it was well worth the price. "Black Wade" is a gay romance graphic novel - similar to hard yaoi in theme and tone. And I do mean HARD yaoi, this book contains very graphic sex scenes, including noncon at the beginning. A typical yaoi manga runs about $12.95 to as much as $15.95 for a trade paperback in black and white. This is not only a hardcover edition, it is also FULL COLOR throughout like standard graphic novels. So the higher price is actually reasonable. There is no dust jacket, but the cover image is printed right on the binding. It has 80 pages, but the pages are larger format so readers get about as much content as a manga, perhaps a tad bit less. Also, the production values are high quality. The paper is heavier stock than normal graphic novels, and very bright showcasing the brilliant coloring of the artwork.

Art is subjective, but I found the artwork here to be excellent, and extremely well done. Clean lines and good proportions on all characters and the text was carefully placed to retain clarity but not block any of the imagery. I found no typos, and the language fit with the period nature of the story. I enjoy yaoi, but sometimes the characters look a little feminine. Not so here, these are "manly men." Right down to having hair on their chests (and other areas ;-) Still, they were attractively drawn. It's a pirate story, so there's action outside the sex as well and the ending leaves room for more without cliffhanging.

I enjoyed the novel so much, I went looking for the publisher's site to see if there would be more from the authors. No news yet, but I really hope they do a sequel. Highly recommended to hard yaoi fans, and M/M fans looking for something new to try.

More swashbuckling goodness than you can shake a stick at.

I can understand exactly what Franze and Andärle mean when they say that their style is; nifty and thoroughly in the details. This precision makes the world of Black Wade incredibly rich and one that you will want to revisit often.

The opening is well scripted with a backstory that deftly gives you an understanding of Jack. A young man, engaged to the luscious Annabeth, but filled with forbidden desires for more masculine curves. Jack has great strength of character and integrity, but he is no match for the merciless pirate who captures him and subjects him to all manner of wicked, nasty goodness. Black Wade is a swarthy, likable rogue with much lustrous hair and beard. I'd like to give him pats. He also has rugby player thighs. These are the very best kind of thighs to have you understand! heh.

The art is incredibly beautiful. The tension and lust between Jack and Black Wade is palpable and so spectacularly hot. I think my favorite panels are of Jack when he is sleeping early on in the book and having some rather erotic and lickable dreams! I also liked the images of Wade lolling about in his room, ship, bath and bed. All of them! He is just lush. The whole book is so gorgeous and it is difficult to narrow it down to just one or two images. The emotion conveyed through the color is also a large part of what makes this such a memorable read and the moody, dark palate used in the picture of Wade on the bridge illustrates this point beautifully.

This is absolutely a must have and has to be one of my favorite reads I've purchased this year. It has everything, dashing heroes, star crossed lovers, bad guys, knee breeches, ships, rope, leather boots and more swashbuckling than you can shake a stick at. Clever, beautiful, utterly romantic and total 5 star plus read.

So, I liked it. Just a bit.
